Hi fellas! My son bought 97 s10 high mileage fairly nice truck.run great,good oil psi,no smoke.after a week he did oil change and it started knocking.called me i lostened to it,pulled plug wires one at time no difference.so im thinkink piston pin?overnite read alot about balance shaft problems so tore front off and chain wore out.i oreder aftermmarket tensoner timing chain kit.pulled engine enough to take oil pan off oil was sludge,only from one day!no movement in rods,couldnt move pistons.put in hv oil pump thinking no oil flow or something.get engine together and starts knocking after warm and when rev engine the knock is like double speed(rattle).he spent all his money and wants to drive until we can get a good engine.any ideas of the knock on 4.3 or a additive to put in oil to prolong quiet down?seen u tube vid,a guy put rislone and stp oil treatment in and a week later piston noise was quiet.any thoights?

What brand and weight oil was used? Also what oil filter was used?
Valvoline MaxLife 10w30 or Pennzoil Conventional 5w30

My 98 would knock at startup drpending upon the filter used. Never had issues with ac delco and ultraguard gold filters (all old stock), or recently, purolator pure 1 and Fram ultra.
Maybe a coolant leak. Intake manifold gasket? If that's it, it's an easy fix.

Sounds like to me that the seller loaded it up with 50wt or lucas and the spec oil has shown the worn bearings.
Probably going to end up being rod and/or main bearings.
drop a quart and add in a quart of lucas and see if that gets rid of it per se.
I would start saving up for a used or reman engine unless u plan on rebuilding it yourself.

Ask the seller what they used since it worked.

Stp oil filter and not sure what he used for oil.after i put pump and timing chain in stp filte and 5w30 castrol high mileage.
Thanks for quick replies fellas.just seen a video where engine knocked and it was caused by the runner flaps in intake.so im thinking it was doctored up to sell.with heavy oil!
20W50 & STP oil treatment will quiet it down!

i gave a friend of mine who was in need of a vehicle my old 1995 chevy 1500 wt it had 258.000 on it.
he drove it for another 7 years took it to 350,000 miles then the frame broke on him. So i am sure that there are some great engine on some junk yards out there ?

My 4 banger has the same issue, sounds like the top-end is going to explode. This is using a Fram TG. Had the same issue on our old Equinox using a Fram XG. Went to AC Delco, problem solved.
To the OP, if the engine is shot, 4.3's are a dime a dozen anymore. I've seen low mileage ones for $250 if you pull them. I know a previous co-worker bought a 1500 with the 4.3 for his son. Changed the oil the first time and same thing, knocking. On a recommendation they put strait 30wt in it, it locked up right then.
