Help me understand O/D operation

Jon, could you clarify a bit? I'm under the impression that the 2002 Accord has a conventionalelectronically controlled(albiet very intelligently) automatic with a top gear ratio of .57(which is an overdrive) and a final drive ratio of 4.44.
 
Zesty's car is much like my PathFinder.

When the OD light is on, the OD function is really "OFF," that is, lock-up cannot occur and the torque convertor provides a slightly higher numerical gear ratio.
 
MolaKule's description of his PathFinder demonstraits another good example of the O/D confusion. Not only are we dealing with a gear set, but also lockup. Some manufactures consider lockup a "gear". In many cases the O/D "off" button will still allow lockup.

Ford and GM no longer have a O/D lockout button on their trucks (or at least some of them). Personally I don't like this. I want to be able to manually select each gear and hold that gear while towing. I also have my converter setup to lock up at 25 mph and stay that way all the time.

There really isn't a general statement that can be made about overdrive anymore. It has to be addressed on a specific model basis as manufactures change their designations for marketing purposes. O/D is still any gear that overdrives the output compared to the input. Problem is there are lot of different ways to achieve this, and even more ways to describe it.

I don't know. You still have transmission gear ratios, and you still have a final drive ratio, even when the final drive is in the transmission case. I've yet to see a car that does not. If the gear ratio is higher than 1:1, then it's OD. The overdrive term applies to the input to the final drive, if the input to the final drive is turning faster than the engine, its overdrive.

My Impala has no OD lockout button, but it does allow you to put it in 3rd, which is direct drive. My Festiva has no direct drive, which is very common now, but 4th and 5th are overdrive gears.

The Honda auto has alot more in common with manual transmissions than other autos - each gear has a pair of clutches that engage and disengage during gear changes. However, the transmission does not use planetary gears and is effectively direct-drive from the torque converter to the wheel once the gear has been changed. At least that is how I understand it.
 
Wow, learn something new every day. I can't find much information on it though. Very interesting. Still has an overdrive though, probably 2, even if they don't call it that.

Just to add more confusion to the mix, with the OD off in some vehicles, the torque converter will still lock in 3rd gear (assuming a 4spd overdrive trans). I'm talking about Wayne...uh..."VaderSS" and the 4L60E in his Impala SS, specifically. With the gear selector in OD, the converter will lock in both 3rd and 4th gear. If you manually put it in Drive, the converter will still lock in direct drive 3rd gear.
 
Why not just have it like Honda does:

N, D4, D3, and L (or equivalent)

or those "auto stick" does:

+/- and D, you tap it up for manual upshift, and tap it down for manual downshift. Much more mature.
