Help me decide... Havoline or Motorcraft 5w30

They are two of my favorites. They are readily available at Walmart and inexpensive. So with that being said...

I like the moly in the Havoline but the MC shows great used oil analysis as well. So what oil is better and why? Thanks for the help!

I'm going to start using dino in the summer, and keep the synthetic during the cold winters, so I'm also pondering these two.

The load of moly in the Havoline is swinging my vote to Havo....

The MC is a syn blend. This MAY, and I stress MAY give you an advantage in very cold temps as you may see in Colorado. If you were to go that route, get the P66, as it is very similar, and cheaper (1.68 qt.). That being said, I run Havoline based on input from here, and the fact I got it all for .75 a quart or less. The listed used oil analysis are good on it, my used oil analysis was good, and it's a proven quality product. Like daman says.. if it's dino, it's Havo.

Please qualify your statements with an explanation on why you think why.

Now for the oil formulation of choice we are looking at two differnt approaches to formulating. If we are going to favor additives then consider that one favors Moly while the other Borate esters. It is not the additives alone it is how they work in particular formulation. I would be happy getting the most economical option.

The vehicles are both Jeeps. Engines are the 4.0L and the 3.7L.

Yes, before anyone says anything about it, I run 5w30 in the 4.0L year round for the most part. I did this in my last 4.0L and it had well over 100k and ran great.

I find it interesting that the MC add pack seems weak but boasts awesome used oil analysis. I guess it goes to show you that there is more to formulating an engine oil than just one may think. Both return nice used oil analysis, even at 5k.

I have 5 jugs of Havoline in the basement now. I was contemplating taking it back to Walmart and getting MC. I really have no desire to use synthetics. But, I to was wondering if the MC synthetic blend would be any advantage. It looks like there is no stand out between the two.

The reason I ask about vehicle/enigne is this: My 2005 Dodge Grand Caravan was using about a quart of Havolineoline in 1200 miles. My last oil change, I used MC 5w20 and it did not use any oil in 3k miles. On my current oil change, I was using up my last five quarts of Havoline 5w20. It only used a about a half quart in 2k miles, which was an improvement. Just something to be aware of.

Brianccfshr, you answer the way you feel best and let evryone else answer for themselves how they want. There are times I just prefer to give my opinion, and then there are times I may wish to elaborate, either way should be welcome on this forum.....

I have run both and my engine does not burn either oil but has not had the lifter tick from lifter bleeding down anymore and from reading other posting in this forum the Moly is supposed to help quiet things down a bit.

From UOA returned the answer gets down to really what ever you like. Between these 2 high quality Conventional oils you could really just pick on bottle color, logo, or price and really do no wrong.
