Hey all, I just got a new GMC Z71 with the 5.3. I get my oil changed at the dealer. Was using Chevron Supreme 10w30, but they don't carry it anymore. They do carry Havoline 10w30 and Pennzoil 10w30. I was curious to which one is "better". Is Havoline pretty close to the Chevron or is Pennzoil the better oil, because in stores it costs more. Or should I just do my best to find some more Chevron? I loved the Chevron and hate they got rid of it due to supply problems. Any advice would be appreciated.

Havoline and Chevron are very close as a minimum. You can't possibly go wrong with Havoline. Anybody's guess if its better than Pennzoil. Flip a coin.

Hi,

I've got a 2000 Silverado Z71 with 4.8l (same engine just shorter stroke) and have run it on Chevron(very good), Mobil 1 (average), Pennzoil (excellent) and the used oil analysis showed that Pennzoil did the best. Better than Tri-Mobil 1.

I'd run any of the brands you stated and enjoy the outfit!

If you put Pennzoil in that GMC truck, you might as well go ahead and blow a hole in the engine block with a .357 while you're at it.

Oh wise one, please enlighten us, the unwashed masses, as to the reasons that Pennzoil will cause such calamity.

i'm guessing this is a joke? .... pennzoil is as good as castrol gtx, or better. times have changed, so have oils.... have used it, still use it, good oil...., one of the best.

go with whichever one is cheaper. there really isnt that much of a difference in todays conventional oils imo.

if pennzoil was really that bad then the millions of cars that jiffy lubes service would spontainiously (i think i spelled it wrong) blow up.

racer12306,

Does Jiffy Lube actually sell Syn Pennzoil ?

GMC_Z71,
Use the cheapest GF4 SM rated oil you can get. Havoline is always cheaper than Pennzoil.

they do not sell it over the counter but for use with their services, yes. the corporate owned jiffy lubes are required to use all pennzoil products: dino, syn, atf, grease, gear lube, etc. franchise jiffy lubes have the option to use a jiffy lube approved oil, a common one is exxon superflo because of price.

Uh, my personal take on that was that it may well have been satire...

Or, is it "...well MAY have been..."?
