BTW, my mechanic, who's a solid guy, is involved in one of these energy schemes.

My problem with his sales pitchis that he wanted me to buy a "license" to sell before he wanted me to buy the service.

That's putting the cart before the horse.
 
Many do not understand MLM. It's a common mistake.

Then add in the inevitable foibles of people. There will be stories told.

It has been abused before, it will be again.

MLM can vary widely between companies. Unfortunately, the very bad ones make the reputation for all of them. My wife has some friends that were members of the big one that starts with the letter "A" for decades and had always told everybody that they would retire early. They finally quite the company cold turkey and did retire, although it was from their brick and mortar business, not the MLM business.
