Horses don't have to be expensive. In my experience. It's the lifestyle that's expensive. If you have pastured horses. Are keeping the fence up anyway and just ride casually it's not that bad. It's kind of like dogs. Big difference between having an adopted from a shelter pet and the $60,000 a year dog show scene.

I like to complain but its nice having some horses around. My wife and daughters love them and its good for the soul. We try to have as much pasture as we can but our 10 acres has limited space, so we haul a lot of feed. We pay more up front to have good fence, feed and vet care, which saves even bigger down the line.

Our number fluctuates but we have horses coming and going for board and training. Either way, they eat hay, they eat fence and as smart as they are, always find away to unjure themselves.
