Been watching lots of shows, videos with horses in them and wondered how many on here have had or have horses? They seem like a lot of work but can be very rewarding.

What kind and how many?

Horses are expensive. I have owned 4 Quarter Horses [just the breed I like] over the years and as a kid would enjoy the ranch horses. They are a life style and really take over your life and finances . I have spent lots of time with the Horses, they communicate very well and can read you like a book. Since I put down my last horse in 2017 I no longer have a horse though my daughter has two Warm Blood sport horses and I won't ride them because I do not want to die.

My parents have owned, bred, and showed Appaloosas since the early 70s. I wouldn't care if I never see another horse for as long as I live. 🤣

At their peak, they had 25. My father died 12 years ago, and my mother only has ~5 now. Lots of work, can be expensive, but also like anything done properly, can be profitable.

Neapolitan Mastiff. Close in size to a horse.

My neighbors have a couple, see them every day. No idea what kind. Too much work (and expense). Every time I see them taking a dump ~200' away, I'm glad they're down-wind from me.

No.

Neighbors on both sides of me had horses all my life. I only saw concern, talk of expense and additional workload.
Then the neighbors erected a good sized barn and opened some woods to make a nice paddock. They boarded horses for income and the math worked out, I was told.

Their paddock was located near a state highway as well as the adjacent state. Commonly, a 4 or 6 horse trailer was used for events and they'd unload 'em all at their place. This freed up the trailer and driver sooner. Their friends would come with single and double horse trailers in the days following.

Guess what! Baby horses would come down the pike unexpectedly.

That was the only smile related to horses.

I love 'em and think they're beautiful but they're not anything I ever wanted or needed.

Horse poop is the best kind of poop !

Horses are a lifestyle, like Jeeps, if you have to ask you don't understand. My son had a nice 1 acre property just outside of town, had a rare perennial stream at the back, great back yard. Neighbor got 2 horses and immediately you couldn't spend time in the backyard for the biting horseflies. And the smell. Owners always talk of the expense but keep them.

Around here there must be big money in horses. Everyone who has them also has a big new horse trailer with living quarters and a tack room and a new diesel dually pickup to pull it, not to mention a new hat.

I seen lots of nice horse farms in Kentucky. My dad had a couple horses when we were kids but we were always afraid to ride them. We liked our dirt bikes though.

If you want to know what it's like to drive a Tesla in "self driving" mode, and it goes rouge because the system freaks out, then just ride a horse that is not well trained or you don't know.

Calgary is a city where lots of people keep a horse at riding stable surrounding the city. Horse owners often enter into an agreement to share the horse with another family and split the costs. For my daughter we did just that. The horse got way more riding time. My daughter loved the horse but come time when other activities took over, we just walked away. Luckily there were no large vet bills to share. And yes, we owned the back end of the horse. :p
