Hatred towards Fram

I grew up using some Fram and STP oil filters back when Fram was owned by Bendix and STP oil filters were red & white. But I mainly used Western Auto house brand air & oil filters when they were around. After that some Deutsch, Powerflow, Quaker State, KMart, etc. but if I couldn't find a bargain filter I'd spend a little more coin on an orange Fram. Having them handy at Walmart after Western Auto disappeared helped.

My guess is that if you took the same toyota corolla and ran a orange can fram on one and an ultra on the other, they both would go 250k plus.

Likewise if you ran the Ultra on one and the Toyota OEM on the other..

Where are Fram Filters made? I thought it was Ohio? Can anyone explain what Plants make what fram filters?

Fram filters used to be made in Nevada Missouri about 35 miles from where I live. The closed the plant and moved to Mexico, I know people that lost their jobs, not well but this is a rural area, and the family names mean a lot.

I noticed Fram air filters did not get dirty nearly as fast as ACon the gravel roads around here. AC became my preferred brand. For a long time I was a Fram hater. I also had one leak out the seam and make a big mess. Now I use the Ultra, but I still use AC Air filters.

They make most of their oil filters in Illinois except for some low volume applications which they get from other people

When your entry level filter is referred to as the "orange cans of death", it will be hard for many people to use a product that doesn't have a stellar reputation.

I've seen numerous cut and posts of orange can frams that look acceptable. However I think that the Ultra is the way to go if You are comfortable running one filter for multiple oil changes. Once my wife's stash of remaining filters is used up, I'll be switching to the ultra and running it for 20,000km intervals on her Civic.

I used to believe the Fram hate, until I cut a few open. Sure there are horror stories from back in the day, but there were about Pennzoil too. Times change, technology changes, and products are always evolving. A year or two ago this board was all about Purolators being the bang for the buck budget filter, I doubt everyone would say that as of right now. It is important in life to form your own opinions. Find things out for yourself and make a decision based on that.

I do use Fram Ultras now, and have used a few other Frams on lawn equipment. I will say that I do hate the textured grip. I've had a few of them (mostly installed by others that I needed to remove) that were on extremely tight. The textured grip made it almost impossible to fit my fluted oil filter wrench that fits into a ratchet on the end.

The pleats on a no end cap filter like the Toyota can't tear at the ends even if they move. End caps in the way means oil has to flow around them in a narrow slit. The Toyota pleats are like two pleats side by side glued at the ends, then fanned out, more media area. I think it is a superior design, no end caps. There is hate and love on everything on the internet. I don't see anyone here hating oil filters, just because they point out defects they see. The Ultra is a wonderful filter because of it's media, and I see pictures of Extra Guards that are the opposite of wonderful. The rest of the filter is the same on Ultra or EG except silicon adbv. So what is wrong with saying it.

It really originated from the minimopar site, where they hated on Fram's endcaps, and deemed metal endcaps are superior.

No technical data, but there's an irrational hatred for non-metallic endcaps.

My VW's with cartridge filters never had metal endcaps, so they should be hated like fram.

Yep, and I posted the details in my earlier message in this thread.

I don't think many people here are reading past the initial message before posting to this thread.

The Denso oil filter are well made. Not using end caps just increases the filter media. I've used them and cut them up for years and never have seen a failure. If you change your oil at the recommended OEM interval, you won't have a problem, even using a Fram.

I'm recent joiner, but long time reader here. Back in the early 60s I used Fram filters because they were easiest to come by. Used 'em on my first car (1963 Ford Fairlane with a 170cuin straight six, stick shift). Later learned about Wix and NAPA, and went to those. It seems that if a product was that bad, folks everywhere would eventually stop using it and the manufacturer would either have to make improvements or close shop (and move to China) . . . what am I missing here ?
