hastings filter defect?

bought a hastings LF 589 filter for my tacoma, and a LF157 for my moms neon. looking at the inside of the 589 i noticed the top of the steel center tube is sealed in one spot, while the rest of it is not, showing a big gap and exposing the filter element. should i use it or is it a defect? i checked the 157 filter after seeing this and it is perfect, unlike the 589. i ve always liked hastings filtes but this kinda worries me.

Hmmm...I don't know that the center tube needs to be "sealed". If the media is sealed to the end cap it should not be able to leak, I think the center tube provides structure to the element. That said, I don't know if the lack of support would allow the element to collapse and possibly compromise the media.

No use worrying - bring it back if you can!! I wouldnt put it on a New Taco. BTW if you can get non-ecore delco, they work very well on most toys. I had problems with Federated Ap hastings before. Not the best - at least in the jobber grade.

i only bought it because it was the same length as my oem toyota filter, i refuse to use the short aftermrket ones. ones ive considered using are the Fram XG3600, Puro P1 20195 or the longer Mobil 1, not sure of the part number. are all of these filters the same length as my oem filter, a 90015-YZZD3? would using any of these longer filters affect my engine or warranty?
