in the USA Mazda 5W30 is conventional oil but it is what Mazda specs for their turbo CX5/50 etc...wondering how it really stacks up?

I want to say I say one at one time. It was fairly unremarkable, but did have a good shot of Moly because it was made by Idemitsu. Not sure if it still is though?

I did find a 0w-20:

This is a Sample of Virgin Mazda 0W-20. The additive package is pretty standard stuff, but there was a lot of Moly present. That's not a problem by any means, just something interesting to note. The viscosity at 40c is 35.852.

How do we know it is conventional? I'm going to guess that in order to obtain an API SP license it must be majority hydrocracked base.
Mazda North America said it was...the mazda 0w20 is synthetic and clearly states that on the bottle. the dealership gave me 3 free oil changes and on the paper work it shows conventional I asked what oil they used and they said on the turbos they do not use bulk oil but individual bottles of this...I asked why would Mazda recommend conventional for a turbo and they said they had already been down that path with Mazda corporate and were told that it was designed for the turbos...it apparently is made by Conoco Phillips for Mazda..the crazy thing is in Canada mazda 5W30 is clearly marked synthetic and is in a different bottle.

It says conventional on that bottle somewhere?

And that answer is a bunch of nonsense. Considering most synthetics today are Group III bases, whether it is synthesized or hydroprocessed without hydrocracking still yields the same essential molecules. Even GTL is a basic linear hydrocarbon. Not until you get to a Group IV or V does the structure become markedly different. What you get from a synthetic Group III is a better viscosity index, less contaminates and higher saturation - all valuable attributes especially for a turbocharger.

yes it seems crazy. after two free ones I skipped the 3rd and am using PUP...it would be interesting to see the differece between the mazda branded 5w30 sold in the US and the mazda branded 5w30 sold in Canada...

This was how much my local Mazda dealer would charge me had I not had my 2 free prepaid visits that came with the car. needless to say, this was my last, those 2 times were the only visits there lol 🤷‍♂️ 😆
