PP in a Honda Civic. Mine is a 1.7 and I really like the protection and things I hear about PP, but I feel like the engine has not been as efficient on it, and the mpg have dropped. I have 5w20 in there, and stocked up on PP, but was thinking about going to something thinner like MC 5w20. It's not like it's a drastic loss in MPG, maybe 1 or 2 at most. Has anyone else had this problem in their engine, or think that I am sacrificing anything if I go to MC 5w20? Do you think I should just use the remaining PP then switch? I have enough for about 2 more OCI

I have never heard lossing 1-2 MPG useing Pennzoil Platnium.
I would use Pennzoil Platnium over MC.

If you want the best fuel economy try mobil 1 0w20, but that, the most fuel efficent oil made for a xw20 application will not yield a 1-2mpg difference.

Perhaps, since your useing a new oil, you right foot is having a little to much fun with the throttle pedal. reducing your speed on open roads by 10 MPH will increase your MPG alot more than oil will(but theres NO FUN in that!!!!)

Thinner PP or YB??

A 5w20 weight oil is a 5w20 weight oil!!
The diffrence between the two are almost nul unless we are talking about sub zero temps.

In sub zero temps a synthetic will be thinner then a Dino oil.

How many miles on your Civic? What have you been using before the PP? How long have you had the PP in?
I'm using PP 5w-20 on my 06 Civic and the car seems very happy with it (smooth revs). As far as MPG, no changes. Been averaging 28 using ValSyn,PenYB,RL.

I also lost lots of mpgs while using PP for one OCI...it seems our oil pumps prefer thinner oil due to its pumping loss. You are in a bind. I would try to return the PP with a receipt and go with MC 5w-20. You will get more miles with you 2 more mpg and it will protect you for 5k-ish OCIs. Since it is now Fall and soon Winter, you won't need as much hot/severe protection.

Motorcraft 5w20 will work great for your application and is a great price for 6 month 5k oci's to boot.

Thanks for the answers, I think I may switch to MC 5w20 next OCI. BUT I am also wondering something else now. I have pretty much been using Sunoco Regular gas exclusively, not because I am a strict one gas person, but because it has been cheapest and closest. Well 3 days ago I filled up with BP as I was about to runout and it was closer and reasonably priced. It seems like the car is running better now, think it could have anything to do with that?

It might have something to do with the weather or summer/winter gas. 1-2mpg is a lot, and you probably won't see that in anything other than tire pressure or tire type.

Yes, Hondas are sensitive to oil as we mentioned as well as gas. Mine loves Chevron but this could apply to any Top Tier gasoline (although I haven't much better luck then with Chevron)

It definitely could be better gas and I would continue to use it unless, of course, you find something that works better like perhaps Chevron or other.

Thanks, unfortunately I don't have chevron around here, the only Texaco that was left was owned by a man who refused to sell for years, but gave in due to the economy and it turned into a sunoco. Anyway, I will keep running the BP since it has the invigorate additive and seems to be running well, and see about the switch to MC, thanks for the help

Does anybody else on here think you would see a true 1 - 2 mpg difference between two different 5W20 brands?
I find it really difficult to believe.....

I think that everyone who sees or perceives changes in fuel economy needs to join cleanMPG.com and start a fuel log. You don't even have to put in the individual tanks if you don't want to ..just keep track of the gallons and your odometer.

I found this from another member using it. I intend to keep it current.
