has anyone succesfully filed a warranty claim?

I was reading the warranty for a major tire manufacturer, and it seems very hard to successfully file a claim for premature wear.

First, the tire has to wear down to the wear indicator (2/32"). But who waits until the tire is nearly bald before replacing their tires? I don't.

Second, they require documented tire rotations every 3k to 4k miles. Does anyone comply with this? (I rotate the tires myself so I have no documentation)

BF Goodrich warrantied a set of Rugged Trail tires that came OEM on my 2008 Tacoma. They were cracking between the tread with ~20k miles. They gave me 65% off a replacement set.

I was getting service done at the Toyota dealer and the guy at Sears did glance at the records at the request of BF Goodrich. I imagine if you recorded the rotations somewhere, that would be satisfactory.

As a side note, the Rugged Trail is an awful tire. Do not buy. The rain and snow performance was outstandingly poor.

Discount Tire are good at this.

The local manager told me he would look after me if the different size rears on my Mercedes ended up wearing unevenly due to the stock set up.

In fact I chose those tires because they didn't have a lesser warranty if rear tires are a different size.

Let's see what happens if I need the warranty (which I suspect I will since the previous rears went very quickly).

The question I would ask though is that you end up having to buy from the same manufacturer and probably at the full retail price.

So I don't think the manufacturer loses out much on these warranty claims.

I successfully used Continental's Road Hazard coverage. They cover the tire for the first 2/32nds of wear. (I do believe I paid taxes and mounting again.)

I've claimed on the mileage warranties before. Discount Tire does it for you, basically.

Never for premature wear, but I had a belt slip on one once and Goodyear/ VIA Discount Tire replaced all 4. I guess there was a recall or something as I never investigated it but I didn't care...I had 4 new tires. That is why Discount still gets my business.

Misunderstanding tire warranties and proper tire maintenance is one of the biggest problems that we encounter regarding customer satisfaction.

Customers often do the same thing with their tires that they do with their cars. They don't maintain them because they are under warranty, and they think that they are covered no matter what.

I try to gently inform customers that a warranty is an agreement between the manufacturer and the customer. If the customer meets their obligation, maintenance, then the manufacturer will meet their obligation, replacement.

Customers rarely understand that a treadlife warranty is a guarantee that tires will not wear below a certain point in a given time frame. They do not protect against uneven wear because it is usually caused by the vehicle or lack of maintenance, i.e. rotations and alignments. Customers usually don't understand that no vehicle is going to hold alignment until they buy their next set of tires.

This is the same issue I would have. No Discount Tire near me, the closest that I can think of is going to Sears and getting the lifetime rotation (I have family members that do this usually) but it doesn't make sense for me time wise.

The least set of Kumhos I had I was curious if I would get anything when I complained once they got to 2/32nds but the cars gone now.

Places that do the whole job discount tire, costco , samsclub will make it easier, but you really need to have em do the rotation, its free but takes time..

they going to take care of new purchases first of course.

I had Bridgestone/Firestone giving me proration when tires failed at lowish miles. The way they priced their tires and mounting charges, it was very little, and it was cheaper to get new tires somewhere else with no prorating.

I get my tires through Discount Tire. Ours never make it to the stated warranty and I never wait until they are at 2/32" either. Usually replace them somewhere around 4/32".

I don't know if Discount files them with the tire manufacture or just gives me credit and sells them for used tires?

I just replaced a set of Kumhos on my Frontier with some Bridgestone Dueller H/L Alenzas because there was "radial pull" that started over the winter. The Kumhos were 1/2 worn and they gave me back over 1/2 of what I paid for them.

I do always deal with the same store though, that might help?

Discount Tire/America's Tire are good at mileage warranty.

My local America's Tire manager told me that I don't need to wait until the tires wear down to 2/32" to claim mileage warranty, around 3/32" to 4/32" are eligible especially before/during raining season.

No, they don't resale any tire with less than 5/32" tread depth. They ship all mileage warranty tires to distributor/manufacture.

Mileage warranty is one of the reasons I like to buy tires from DT/AT, and since they do price match I usually get the low price online(shipping included) and they will price match the lowest price.

Good price and good services why go anywhere else ?

I've always taken the mileage warranty as nothing more than a general guide as to how long any given tire might last under ideal conditions on a ideal car. Way too many variables to even worry about a mileage claim, plus I would never run my tires down to 2/32's anyway. I've known people that have tried to get a warranty when their tires are only worn half worn thinking they shouldn't be half worn yet. Most claim's I would guess just come down to putting oil on a squeaky wheel to make someone quiet.

I don't blame customers not bothering because the savings involved are not really worth it.

I got tires with a 70k mile treadwear warranty for $312.

That's $44 per 10000 miles they wear out short. Say I don't look after them over 7 years and they last 50000 miles instead.

So that's $88 I stand to lose. I have to do 23 rotations, at least one alignment and any follow up if it isn't perfect. Then when I claim, I have to buy an equivalent tire from the same manufacturer at their retail price.

So I may end up spending more on an inferior tire. That is going to offset the $88 saving and for the privilege I had to work quite hard for years I rotate on time and do alignments.

The warranty is useful as an indication of what the manufacturer will stand behind, and its useful if treadwear ends up being really bad.

But even then, I have a set of Yokohamas that have worn very badly and I got such a good deal on new tires, I'm not even bothering with running them down and claiming. I might mention it to Discount Tire when I go in for mounting if the tires are still in warranty from a time point of view.

Discount Tire gives you a pro-rated discount on new tires. They end up seeking the reimbursement, meaning they're sort of fronting you the reimbursement funds.

Sears does a good job on warranty. When they sell you tires, you also get a rotation and balance for free every 6 months and they will warranty the tires. Give them a chance if you have been unlucky elsewhere

I was very pleased on how Discount Tire treated me on a tread wear warranty claim. A set of Pirelli P5 tires wore out way too soon. When I called Discount Tire and told them that I didn't want another set of Pirelli, because I was so disappointed with the tread wear, they said "No problem. You can apply the warranty to any tire we carry." So I drove off with a new set of Michelin for about $220.

That's a good point. If you say you're not happy, they'll accommodate you.

I did that once with them on some new tires and they put it right with little arguing.

I use Sears as well, They have replaced 3 of the Goodyear ComforTreds on the wife's Toyota...Even though I only bought 2 of the tires from them. The 10 ply Michelins on my trucks don't need much maintenance.
