Has anyone here had an oil related engine failure?

Over the years I have had a number of failures in race bike motors that could have been oil related, or not. In each case premium oil of the proper spec was in use and changed frequently.

Spun bearings, thrown rods, excessively scored cylinders, wrist pin wear, etc.

In some cases there were known design defects.

In at least one case the fault was my own, but many of these were stock factory motors.

“I've lost Several cams and lifters in v8 s over the years. Never ran low or over 3000 miles oci. Id call that an oil related failure.”

There must be a little more to this story. Were these pushrod flat tappet engines, and or high spring rate valve trains. Or high RPM scenarios.

Or Chevy small blocks in the 1980s, which ate cams no matter what, even with the high ZDDP oils of the day.

Back in the late 1970's I bought my first car. After the first 10,000 miles I wanted to do something that would make the engine last a very long time.

I decided to put in 50w or 60w oil, because as we all know, very thick heavy oil means long, long engine life. NOT!

At 30,000 miles the engine was burning a quart of oil every 300 miles, and blue smoke poured out of the tail pipe like a blue river of fog. In the morning, the pistons slapping around like they were lose.

The car manual called for 30w oil :-( That was back in the day when at age 20 I "knew" more then the car engineers....lol
