Was kind of surprised to see the boxes near checkout and on the way in at my closest TJ's. I think they were $9.99 for maybe 2.5 lbs. Looking at them, every box seemed a bit overripe, but I suppose that's generally OK with buttery pears. Didn't recall them before, but it sounds like they've been doing this for several years.
I seem to recall that the stuff they were big on at their old stores and mail order was the "Royal Riviera" pear, which was their specialty. I don't see any Comice pears on their website. Sounds like it's something they have grown just for Trader Joe's or maybe they have some at their remaining physical store.

But the really odd thing is seeing the name again. Their stores used to be at lot of different malls and outlet malls. I'd been to their flagshop store in Medford, Oregon, which sold wine and lots of fresh produce.
