July 2, 1776 was the day the Continental Congreff actually voted for independence for Great Britain.* July 4, 1776 was the day they approved of the wording by Thomas Jefferson, aided by Benjamin Franklin, John Adams and two others. The Declaration was then engrossed on parchment and finally signed starting on August 2, 1776. By then King George III already had his copy.

*It did not become The United Kingdom of Great Britain and Ireland until 1800.
