Hantavirus

You guys remember when they tried hyping up monkeypox like it was the next DEADLY shut-down-the-economy plague? Once it started becoming understood it was spread almost exclusively among gay men they completely stopped talking about it. It disappeared.

I lived on the prairies in the 80’s and on very rare occasions someone would get hantavirus when shovelling out a grain bin. There were always mice and occasionally rats in there, as most bins back then had wooden floors. Shovelling and sweeping would stir up the virus from the droppings.

Despite this, catching hantavirus was and is exceedingly rare. I mean tremendously rare. People started wearing masks as a precaution, which is good for the lungs too, and life went on.

Best protection against the Hanta bug.

Alright gentlemen, batten down the hatches and stock up on TP and 0w20 or business as usual?

"Human-to-human transmission of the current hantavirus - specifically the Andes virus involved in the early 2026 cruise ship outbreak - is rare but possible through close, prolonged contact. The fatality rate for this severe respiratory disease is high, with estimates reaching 30% to 50%."

One of those affected travelled on an airplane and another went to a wedding in Turkey.

What's your take, too early to tell?

You should definitely be terrified of Hantavirus if you live in a "You are entitled to believe whatever you want to believe" world where experts don't matter. Like suburban housewives who don't have their children vaccinated because vaccinations cause autism. I mean, a housewife knows better than a scientist, right?

Despite your slight, "experts" have agendas as well. Gov employed experts, I think history tells us a thing or two.

First of all, gum yappers on TV. Nope. Hype is WORSE. Look what hype has done in this very thread.

The best thing for any virus or bacteria is distance and min/no contact. Yes avoid all really nasty stuff, but don't live in an antibiotic world either.

I've said my piece on hanta. Yes we knew someone who died in ~2003/4 as I recall. She was cleaning an old shed full of dusty rodent piss and turds. No gloves, no mask. Died in 2-3 days. If I had such a task? No way, burn or bull doze.

It's not a major threat in the US. Salmonella is a far larger threat. Too much Youtube and TV commentators fear mongers.

I remember, and it must have a been a slow news cycle. Media will jump on anything that can get clicks via some fear mongering. +10 for pox and +50 for monkey.

-100 for the uh, other part.

Media was dying until 2016 when they leveraged extreme hype, now it's anything goes IMHO, including lying, making up sources, and then correcting/rescinding them on page 99 3 months later.

Now they like to double down and deny they were wrong, lied, or just made it up.

Overkill and Snag might recall - but I was in Newfoundland when they recorded the first two cases of sars !
One sars knee - and one sars back 😷
