Hantavirus

Floating Petri dishes. Have zero desire to go on the typical cruise. I will, however, do a Viking River cruise or similar high end river cruise...I like the Danube ones. 7-10 days max.

We took Viking cruise of Paris to Normandy. Couple hundred on board. Very clean, good food, fun activities on shore. Nobody got sick.

Mice are weird.
I say that as someone living in a home with mice issues that come and go. We used to have a bad problem with mice /mice poop/mice chewing stuff up. Traps and online mice deterrent suggestions were useless. Keeping a clean home helps as with putting food stuff away or in containers . But they don't always go after food products.

Currently in a good year with no mice droppings/no sightings of mice, no chew damages . Just like that, they disappeared . Not the first time, where they just go away and don't return. No cat , nothing really has not changed inside the home. I have a 7 year old Husky and he does sleep inside , except on the warmer Summer nights (I have an enclosed small 5'X8 back porch fixed up for him with blankets/house /food/water/windows for fresh air/carpet over vinyl flooring).

My big worry is I will need to clean out two outside storage sheds in my covered carport. In there, mice/rats have ruined Everything over the years with their poop and piss. Lots of stuff needs to be hauled out and loaded up to go to the City dump. Then I have to shovel mouse/rat poop. I did this once before, at least 10 years ago.
When I go at it again, I will wear full safety gear....safety glasses/ face mask/dish gloves/boots/coveralls. And eventually need to spray down the inside of these two sheds with a home made mixture of bleach + water +whatever (Dettol?) , set up fans , etc.

There was never any food products in these two sheds. Just some tools, tool carts on wheels, old paint cans, etc. The vermin still held their parties , goes to show they do not seek out shelter with food 24/7 to do their destruction.

A stray cat had kittens in my tarp garage in the fall. I ended up starting to feed them. They hung around all winter. This was the first winter I didn't have any issues with mice getting into the tarp garage, vehicles, garage or house.

Deer mice don’t live in the NYC subways
No kidding, at least not yet. IIRC the virus in question came from rats on a cruise ship apparently, and NYC subways are loaded with them. Yes in the US it can come from deer droppings. I doubt NYC subway rat droppings are any different from the rat droppings on a that cruise ship. So the jury would be out on deer in this case. Fortunately I haven't heard any stories of NY'ers traveling the subway having problems.

I'm prepared if I have to isolate.

lazy bastard.webp

We had visible mice living in our Combine Harvester and hantavirus was our biggest fear, besides miles of damaged wiring. That was 20 years ago. It's not new, and it's not a widespread concern.
But if you contract it Odds are a bit rough. I lived in the four corners in 1993 when 33 people contracted it. Seventeen of them died.

If this managed to mutate to spread easily this would make COVID look like a big joke.

No one will listen, though, due to the post game analysis showing how poorly the “experts” reacted. That’s the main fear I have.

You need 100 years between pandemics so people who remember the last one can die off.

I remember driving on remote dirt roads in the 1980's to go camping/fishing on the San Carlos Indian Reservation and seeing signs saying "Warning: bubonic plague...".
Plague is endemic to parts of California and the southwest. It is naturally occurring there in fleas carried by squirrels and rodents.

Mice are very hard

MIce are very hard to get rid of.
I once had a auto glasscustomer in my shop . He needed a windshield in his Ford Ranger Pest control vehicle.

We discussed the mice issue in my home, what tips i could try, etc.
He laughed, said he had mice. Took him over a month, and he did Everything, things the average home owner will not do.
And he said they will probably return in his home.
We discussed home remedies, moth balls, traps, sonic devices......peppermint, you name it.
All useless.
Mice are Very smart, they know how to survive, how to feed their babies, how to hide.😉

Not too far from where I live, over in Victoria Canada, one confirmed positive case of MouseyVirus.
The Chief medical doctor for our Province of BC said the person being treated and otherwise seens fine.

We keep being told not so contagious, nothing at all like the Corona Virus.

I betcha the next week or so, CNN and others will report spreading like crazy, wear a mask, carry a flamethrower , wear a crucifix and clean underwear.
And line up for your mickey mouse vaccine.
🤨

The odd one off infections don't usually make the national/international news. There is a lady near here who contracted botulism from falling face down on a hiking trail. The dirt got in her mouth and nose. Health Dept said yes, it happens. No excitement folks, just don't eat dirt. Same with Hantavirus. We have plague, Dengue fever, and Malaria in the US too. No the sky is falling though.
Half of BITOG members got plague shots in boot or pre-deployment anyway.
