for my sons 21st B-day I'm gifting him my 9mm. looking for handgun safe recommendations. something with fairly quick access but mainly one that will keep it out of the wrong hands.

I absolutely love my Fort Knox brand "Pistol Box" safe (FTK-PB). Been using it for years. Small enough to slide under the bed or you can bolt it to the floor for serious theft resistance. Plenty of room for two handguns, extra mags and a tactical light. Best part is the completely mechanical quick access locking mechanism. No worries about batteries or EMP/CME/SHTF/ETC!

I have a Liberty brand next to the bed, and I love it. Keeps it out of the hands of my 4 and 5 year olds.

Mine has a fingerprint scanner so I can open it in one second flat, and it has worked perfect since I bought it.

I second the recommendation of the Fort Knox pistol safe. I really like mine. Solid, secure, and ease of entry without worrying about batteries.

Take a look at the lucky gunner reviews.

Simplex lock only, no biometrics, fingerprints, rfid, etc.

Look at paying around $200 for a US made quality item.

Thanks! I just checked CA regulations and found the following:

The transfer of a firearm between a parent and child or a grandparent and grandchild is exempt from the dealer transfer requirement. The exemption does not apply to step-children/step-parents, brothers, sisters, aunts, uncles, or cousins.
If the firearm is a handgun, the recipient must obtain a Handgun Safety Certificate prior to taking possession and must also submit a Report of Operation of Law or Intra-Familial Handgun Transaction and $19 fee to the DOJ within 30 days after taking possession.
