Gunk? Before oil change?

I've used gunk right before a oil change. However, the more I've read, I think if I am a user of Mobil-1, that my engine should have no need of using gunk with the oil change.

So, among my vehicles, I have a 08 Honda Civic with 25000 on it. I've used Mobil-1 since the 5000 mile mark and tend to change the oil and filter, around the 5000 mark. My next oil change for the civic is coming up, and I was thinking abount putting gunk in for this change, while the car is still under warranty.

So the question is, is there really a need for using gunk with my civic and if there is , how often should I use it (In any vehicle)?

Thanks

While we always want our engine to be 100% all the time I don't think its needed every oil change. Maybe once a year, typically when doing an oil change after the winter months as those are the harshest times for oil and your car.

Running every oil change means your putting a solvent in your engine every oil change. Try doing it once or twice a year, Civics tend to be easy on oil and I doubt would build up much carbon deposits that quickly.

I may get flack for it, but I'd rather use MMO in my gas tank, every tank full to keep the fuel in better shape and lube the top of my engine and clean the injectors which would help with keeping the engine in good shape. Also null some of the effects of Ethanol.

There is nothing wrong with gunk. A while ago i made a post in someone else thread about how it wiped out some seals and bearings on my dodge at the time (66 kuda) and i refered to it as bad stuff. Well guess what I did not read all the directions, and missed the part that stated "for severely slugged up engines remove and clean the oil pan and oil pickup" Well Stupid is as stupid does. I did not drop the pan, i just put in oil, filter and drove until I spun a bearing due to my own stupidity. I was younger then, but smarter now. When used as directed gunk motor flush will help clean out a dirty engine. There are many other great flushes out there too AEF, B-12, BG, Carquest (gunk ?) seafoam. All seam to work well.

Hey grease_monkey. You also are not suppose to drive around with it in. You are supposed to idle for like 10 minutes.

If you have run good syn oil you shouldn't need it.

Maybe older vehicles, high mileage or poorly maintained ones.

I didn't drive with the flush in my engine. I flushed the motor drained and re filled and put a new filter on. But did not drop the pan

Instructions say idle for not more than mins. At least they do now.

Sorry, meant to say "Instructions say idle for not more than four mins. At least they do now."

If you have used Mobil 1 from new, there should be no need to do this. After ten years on a Chevy truck run always on Mobil 1, the underneath of the valve covers and the top of the heads were pristine. Why add something that is so aggressive? It might be useful if the engine is crudded up but since you are paying for a quality syn which has a reputation for keeping engines very clean, why do it?

You would be better off to use AutoRx and clean as you drive. After that just run a maintenance dose. Get a used oil analysis and really see what's going on inside.
