GTX good for app.

I have a 98 Chevy s10 pickup 2.2L 4cy I drive daily about 30-40 miles it has 89K miles on it I was wondering if Castrol GTX 5w30 would be a choice for application

It seems like most folks on here are not too crazy about GTX. I have used it without issue for many years and over a million miles and would not hesitate to use that oil in your application.

Good choice? It should be pretty good for a conventional oil. How often do you change and how many miles? 3600 miles every 3 months....

Yeah I havent saw many ppl talk about it on here just I was just making sure.. I change it usally before 3K about 2500-3000

In warm to hot climates GTX is a good oil, but it sacrifices cold weather performance for the high temperature performance.

It barely passes the GM cold pump test for 6094M, and that is a fairly rudimentary test almost all conventional oils pass easily.

I would use it anywhere temperatures don't get below freezing too often.

ehhhh In the winters here in southwest VA its almost always below freezing it's 39.6 F today would Valvoline (wb) be any better

Any SM rated 5w30 conventional will serve you well, especially if your changing it so frequently. If your engine is running well there shouldn't be any reason you can't go up to 5K OCIs. As for me, I prefer Pennzoil, Quaker State or Valvoline.

Valvoline will be a little better in the cold conditions (you can use it to below -5 F without much concern), and it should be close in the hot.


At temperature, all SM conventional oils are pretty similar unless you see extremely high oil temperatures like from towing or high speed running in high temperatures. The only one that really bucks the trend for cold performance from the rest for brand name oil is GTX.

Ive noticed in the product data sheets the Pennzoil conventional flows at a colder temp then the rest of the oils

I dont think its ever been bellow 0 F here so I would be good there
