Grumbling at franchise gas stations

The decline of America can also be seen in things as pedestrian as a gas station and the kind of service they offer, and
how clean and good condition the building is in. Things are looking more and more grim as time passes now.

The new full service corporate ones are spectacular. I would just prefer a local entrepreneur but it seems they are a dyeing breed.

Of course even they don't hold a candle to the 7-elevens in Japan.

The 7-Elevens in Japan are incredible. Super clean, super nice building condition and quality, and amazingly graceful and helpful
sales counter people too. I love Japan.

Stewie even decided to go out on a whim and create an exclusive convenience store part from his gas stations and put it on steroids:
https://spinxmarket.com/

And think restroom cleanliness doesn't matter? GVL has their "Flushies" awards for best bathrooms around town. Spinx Market made the list this year:

We have some pretty interesting ones around here.
Please send flushies to Charleston. We need some help.

I agree your spinx stores there are much nicer than here.

Had a close friend that managed a store here and took a position general managing 6 stores in the Charleston area. She lasted about 2 years down there and came back. Said those stores were trashed and the clientele was fittingly similar. Several times, she had the police close by when walking out to her car at the end of shift. Several people OD'ed in the bathrooms while she was working too. Doubt they will ever get a Flushie.

Me too! First job after high school days was pumping gasoline at the Gulf Service Stations near the house. We had a bunch of those scattered across the area. This was the mid 1970s so some things were of course a tad different. Gasoline I pumped into cars was selling for about 45 to 49cents at the time. We were told by the Manager "check their oil , and wiper fluids if they like." I lucked out and did not have to clean any bathrooms. Those Gulf stations back then had the two service bays and 24hr mechanics on duty. One @ night and one in the day time. Those guys saved me lots of money helping me do the minor things it took back then. Before widespread use of electronic ignition began , I used to hate to fool with those "points." I recall around the late 70s when all of the major oil companies had decided to eliminate as many of their private / family owned stations as they could. Those were real tough times for many families who made their livings off the full service stations. There was a time right before the end where the oil companies were toying with ideas. For a short period we had two type of pump set ups. One was about 50/75cents a gallon more expensive for me to pump your gas and it was discounted for what was the new "self - serve" pumps. I suppose this was prepping us drivers for the days when we would have no choice but to pump your own. Of course the prices stayed up once we all have to pump our own now. One could easily see at the time what a back stabbing deal the oil companies were about to do to all of their life long loyal station owners. Many of whom had no choice but to shut it down after so many years so the oil companies could line their pockets even more deeply with soda / snack and cigarette monies. As if they were not making enough profit.

Third world countryish! in lots of retail places these days. One can actually see the "I do not give a care at all about the customers." attitude from most of the employees these days.

Grumbling/Gambling @ the gas stations near me. YES!

Gambling at gas stations is actually a TRUE FACT all around my area. One can often walk into gas stations here and end up in line behind two to three women with 4-5 kids each in tow. The mother or ? Some do not even look old enough to drive yet! Seen holding an entire fist full of gambling tickets, lotteries and other games. Sometimes looks like easy $100+ and the clerk who has gasoline customers waiting must check all of these gamblers tickets because they are apparently too lazy to check their own. They end up buying another fist full of the gambling tickets, smokes and booze, nothing for the kids and then walk out the door and get into ultra expensive luxury automobiles.

I had the same experience as a young man. As a busboy at a local cafe I was also tasked with cleaning the public bathrooms. The ladies was always far worse, I won’t go into details but ugh.

Gas stations are a pet peeve of mine. How hard is it to keep a clean lot and store, pumps that work and stock the windshield wash with a working squeegee?
Pretty tough when you are too cheap to pay for enough staff to keep up on those things
