group III's are highly refined "dino" oils that act much like the Group IV PAO's that are man made. That's in laymen's terms, i am sure some will give you a more scientific explanation.

Totally different.

Each has a unique set of properties but I think grp V combines all of the good ones in one. Cleaning, polarity, extreme heat protection, extreme cold flow.

No. GF3 and GF4 refer to meeting a set of standards without specifying the type of oil needed to meet them. It is harder and harder to meet the specs as they get more stringent without using better and better base stocks. GF5 is coming soon and some oil companies may have trouble meeting it without adding at least some Group III or Group IV to the blend.
