No not really that I know of there maybe some lists but take with a grian of salt as they say.

there are a lot of guess based on MSDS sheet and "general Ideas" but with GII and GPIII now being used in ALL SM oils the line to SYN gets blurred Me I think a GPIII is a syn.

Any anyway as I have said before NO one knows exactly what % of whatever oil is used UNLESS you blended it, depending on a lot of conditions base oil ratio WILL vary.

AND

1 does not matter buy by the Spec SM lets say
2 by the vis
3 by the price

In general, M1 and Amsoil(with the exception of XL) are full PAO formulations, non-GC Syntec is Grp III with possibly some PAO and/or ester content. Redline, of course, is ester.

All the rest, Maxlife Synthetic, Valvoline SynPower, Quaker State Q, etc. are primarily Grp III.

- Just my personal rating system based on perceptions, as the current MSDS format doesn't actual reveal specific base oil content.

And, of course, I won't mention Royal Purple, as I don't want to deal with "incoming rounds" on that subject!

Mobil1 stopped using PAO base and use group3 base now.

OMG, not M1 is grp III again. My take on this is that M1 is all PAO with a a grp V carrier. Redline is more than 1/2 Ester with PAO and Castrol in general is grp III and I think they've been phasing in a ester carrier. I agree with Bruce(I know better than to do otherwise) that with normal intervals, any SM will do great and that there is no longer a hardline between what conventional and synthetic. It doesn't however mean that one or the other doesn't have higher capabilities or different characteristics as has been recently discussed. Ron AKA would be happy to find out that breaking news about M1. He'd consider it an improvement. I would disagree.

It's pretty easy...in the US, almost all the widely available synlubes but Mobil 1,Amsoil and Royal Purple are Group III based. Up in Canada, you can add Exxon to that list...

There are also some very small independent companies (Redline,Synergyn,Torco, etc) making PAO and or Ester based synthetics, but they are really not players in terms of distribution or market share. Finally, there are some top tier PAO/Ester synlubes imported from Europe that are very good, very expensive and hard to find on the shelf. These include Motul, Elf,Lubromoly, Fuchs, etc

Pablo,

Do you know for a fact they aren't blending in at least some Group III basestocks in specific products?

I suspect even Amsoil is making more use of Group III stocks (or less expensive PAO's) now in selected oils. However since I don't like to speculate, I'm not going to name specific formulations where I think this is taking place.

I can't say what Mobil 1 is doing at this very moment, that's for sure. But the rest is speculation - up to this point Mobil 1 oils where not constructed with Group III base oils.

I'm sure that Mobil is using grpIII in something but they've said repeatedly that it's not in the M1 line.

The rumor is that Mobil5000 is essentially a GroupIII, but Mobil will not list it as synthetic since they have a vested interest in only listing PAO/POE based oils as synthetic.

Please forgive me, because I am trying to understand. Are group IV oils superior to Group III oils ? I know why they are different, but how is the one better?

So you are saying I got to put M1 back on my shoping list!

Actually I think M1 still is primarily group IV based on their specs, so I think I'm safe.

The specs for M5000 look very un-synthetic. Finally a good oil out of Mobil
