My grandma was struggling with an old celeron 2.53ghz (p4 based)

Everytime I had to fix or show her something was like clubbing myself in the face.

Fast forward to yesterday when microcenter sent me an ad.

So one trip to microcenter later its being replaced by a new refurbished one.

Hp dc7800 with windows 7sp1
you cant find the specs online because they are configureable.
but the 2 I bought have.

intel e6750 - [email protected]
2GB ram
160gb hdd
dvd-burner

149$ with windows 7 is hard to beat.

for example this has 2x+ the passmark score of an amd e-450
but the built in video isnt as good.

This doesn't really matter as the processor has enough power to software play 1080p without the video card helping.

as an added bonus its refurbished so it comes with just a fresh install of w7, and a w7 disc and key.... no bloatware.

so if you need a pc, 2nd pc, pc for the kids, whatever... I recommend these highly.

The dc7800 is one of their workhorse corporate workstations. Good solid build and decent horsepower. Sounds like you got a great price.

as an added bonus I thought I was buying

2.3ghz 80gb hdd, and dvd-rom
hp refurb with bloatware

it came with 2.66ghz, 160gb hdd, and dvd burner
fresh install of w7 sp1 that was so fresh It only needed 3 updates.

I'd slap a $20 video card in there that supports video-offloading. Any of the modern NVIDIA and ATi cards will do it. 1080p runs more smoothly and you can multitask too.
 
I may in the future, but she does not use it for anything except email, google, and checking the weather right now.

It was at 70% processor load with 1080p youtube, installing windows updates and doing a mbam scan.

I'm typing this on a DC7800 right now. Has E6550, 2.33, 8GB RAM, upped hard drive to 1TB a couple of years ago. I'm normally running 2-3 VMs on the machine all the time. Getting a bit long in the tooth. Have add-in nVidia GS8400, a real dog but better than the on-board video.

It's been a workhorse but time for something new, I have an Elite 8100 sitting here on the floor with Core i5 760. I'm gonna bump it to the max with 16GB RAM when I get the RAM.

just popped the case because I noticed a dvi-d only video card

its some kind of oem port adapter pci-e 16x card... does not even have memory on it... lol.

silicon graphics orion add a dvi port something

it may get something better in the future but finding a low profile card thats cheap is a job for another day.

That's an Intel SDVO card, basically a header that expands the onboard video to use a DVI connector. Yeah, it's a bit misleading looking at it from just the outside.

Luckily it can easily be removed and replaced with a 'real' 16x PCIe graphics card assuming the power supply can handle it. Newegg has deals on cards all the time, as long as you don't mind sending in rebates.

Anything with Intel's 6600 & higher CPUs will work great with Win7. As mentioned above, an SSD and a cheap video card will make the unit scream, all for a cheap price.

As long as the power supply holds out, it will give you years of good service.

We had great luck rebuilding any HP or Dell unit (Optiplex 745 or higher) with Win7 using using these Core2Duo CPUs
 
I just bought an Optiplex 760 for my parents from Microcenter. Thanks for the heads up on the great deals! My parents needed a good replacement to their aging PowerMac G4. Thy were swinging towards a new Mac Mini, but they only browse the net so this will more than suit their needs. I'm considering buying something similar for a home theater pc.

As long as the MobO has drivers for Windows 7. Asus didn't have drivers for my P5K Deluxe (with overclocked Q6600).... so I essentially built my parents a new computer with a AMD A4 3400/Biostar TA75M (newegg deal) with a Crucial M4 64G SSD from microcenter
