I learned this trick working in a garage over the summer. Makes the filter so easy to take off. However, I've recently noticed a little oil on the bottom of my saabs filter and spray back on the oil pan. Is this a big no no, have I been stupid once again?

My old garage used Lubriplate. This was 30 years ago. It worked fine ..but I just wouldn't care to have any excess get into the oil. My wrench doesn't use anything since he says that there's enough oil on the land/boss from removing the filter. He doesn't get any leaks and he's been in business for over 40 years (handed down/purchased from father).

I just use new oil.

Putting oil on the gasket is used to help the filter seal better to the engine. If you're using grease, it's not going to seal properly (and also why it's easy to take off)... thus the leaking you're seeing.

Dip your finger into a bottle of the new oil and put it on the gasket.

Every filter I've seen says not to use grease. Pre-fill the filter and use that to lubricate the new gasket.

I'll use new oil from now on.
