Each year the grass in one part of my house looks great each Spring, then about this time it thins out quite a bit. It seems like last week it looked great and today it is a little thin. It happens in the same spot each year. I live in NJ and its Kentucky Blue grass. The area is under some trees, It gets some sun each day I was thinking of trimming some branches to see if I could get some more sun in there. Any ideas?

Well, that's easy. You obviously need New Jersey Bluegrass. You're too far east to be using Kentucky Bluegrass, wrong state.

Is it on the north side of the house? I remember my house in Alabama, we had a big tree in the front yard and the grass between the tree and the north side of the house would do the very same thing every year - look great in the spring and thin out during the summer.

I would buy a soil testing kit to start. Or bring a sample some place.

You need to start there.

Type of grass? Amount of sun. Amount of water. Lawn insects. Lawn chemicals you are using?

Could be a shade issue or any number of other things. A picture would be helpful. I actually have a Bachelors in Horticulture with an emphasis in Turfgrass Management, believe it or not.

Kentucky Blue grass is a cool grass. Bermuda grass(warm season) here is ideal unlike bentgrass(cool grass) we may have some problems here due to heat stress during the summer.
