So my grandfather, the one who owned the cavalier just did a first and shocked us all. He's always bought the most barebones base model possible. Well, he just today bought a 2010 Ford Escape Limited, V6 FWD. All the bells and whistles except for the Navigation system and 4WD. Steel Blue paint, black interior. It's the 3.0L Duratec and 6 speed auto. He is extremely happy with it all around so far. He will be taking it to the dealer for service, so no worries there. This is his first Ford product since a disastrious 70s Ford F-250 that pretty much completely fell apart. Hoping he can expect a long lifespan out of it. What do you guys think?

I also have 3 friends who own Escapes...They have no issues whatsoever with them...I saw tons of Escapes on a recent trip recently plus I see tons down here everyday...He made a very smart move!

You see, you do get wiser with age.
The Ford Escape is a great vehicle for your grandfather. The Duratec 3.0L V6 and the 6 speed auto should proviide years of reliability and low maintenance repairs. Also, the new Duratec engines now have timing chains and not that mediocore timing belts that they were known for several years ago. Enjoy the new ride Grandpa !
We drove a 2009 Escape prior to buying our 2010 Equinox. The interior of the new Nox is much better. That said, the Escape is still a nice vehicle (way better than the Rav 4 and I think better than the CRV) and a bit less expensive. I'm sure your gramps will be happy with it.
Grandpa has a nice ride. The only thing I didn't like about my Mariner, was the front seats. They are lousy to say the least. They are way too small even for the shortest of people. Other than that, they are great vehicles. There have been some isolated issues with the 6 spd. Escape-City has lots of info.
While I was in NYC a couple of weeks ago I took a few Escape taxis...Some of the drivers had the 3.0 Duratec engine in their personnel car [Escape] and really liked them....They complained the 4-cylinder hybrid Escape [they use for taxi duty] was very slow on take off from traffic lights...Besides that they said they have no issues with them.

GM has come a long way with their lineup and the new Equinox is a great truck! (my company makes a lot of parts for them)

I'm going to be looking at Ford (again) after we someday trade in the impala.
Ford is definitely on the comeback with it's new offerings (although I think the jury's out on the new Taurus). Meanwhile, the Escape has been around since the 2001 model year with only a few drive train and cosmetic upgrades. Although a good vehicle I agree it pales in comparison to the new Equinox. The Ranger was introduced in 1982 and is LONG overdue for a total replacement...still a good little truck despite it's age (with a lot of satisfied owners...my brother had a 1986 extended cab 4x4 that he still raves about...drove it for years with few problems). Like everyone else, Ford has limited resources and has to choose where it spends it's development dollars. If their latest models are any example, I'd say they're spending wisely (this from a life-long GM guy).
My county bought a ton of Escapes in the past 6 months for county work [including fire department personnel] and it has worked out just fine.
