Hey guys,

My dad's 2002 Grand Prix had the ABS and Traction Control lights come on the dash yesterday. They come on with the car and never shut off. I tried to get the codes read at autozone but they only pull check engine light codes. What could be the causes of this? Sensor bad? Hub? What could cause this before he takes it in to the stealership?

I'd like to help you a lot but I have the exact same problem on my 05 cts but since it stopped raining outside, those lights are off now.

Usually it is a bad speed sensor at one of the wheels, but you'll need a scan tool to tell you what codes are stored.

Had the same problem on my 99 GTP, it's a wheel hub that's bad since the abs sensor is built into the hub. Now you just have to find out which wheel is bad.

Disconnect the battery and see if they come back when the car is started or after you get in motion. There's a self-test at a few MPH that would indict a wheel sensor. Otherwise it's a systematic issue.

Had the same issue on mine, at first it was intermittant, and then it would happen the moment I put it in drive, then it happened the instant I started the car. The wire from the wheel hub speed sensor had broken off. Which is disappointing because it was a new-ish Timken bearing...

friend had this same problem on a Bonneville and had to replace the hub. I don't think you can get the wheel speed sensor separate from the hub. I think the part was like 150 buck or so. On the upside you get all new baring :/

Try to clean the contacts first and the sensor if possible. My truck had a problem where cleaning the sensor fixed it but it didn't turn on the light either. It would kick into abs when coming close to a complete stop on dry pavement.

Oh yeah I just remember my brother's 99 oldsmobile intrigue had the abs motor go out and that put a light up also. Not sure how common this is. I think the wheel speed sensor is a much more common problem than it is though.

Check the wires at each of the wheel sensors. Most likely a bad wheel sensor. They can be had for $75.
