Just looking to breath a little life into a sluggish 1998 Expedition with the 4.6. Anyone done one? Would like to hear real world experiences, good or bad about this. Thanks.

I doubt you'll notice much difference...but for $15, I would try it...I think that even the restriction is larger than the throttle body, so it's really not much of a flow restriction....

Even with the 5.4 and 3.73 gears, my Expedition was not what you would call quick, it had a lot of mass to get moving.

Theoretically, it's a sound idea -- put a piece of black PVC piping in place of the OE cone. More air equates to better performance, right? Well, in reality, any difference is negligible at best. Heck, even a full-on cold air intake system ($$$) won't amount to much of anything on a stock truck...numbers will be higher on a dyno, but zero at the RPM's you're running at on the street (of course, it'll be louder, which seems to fool everyone).

What about everything else in the system -- have you done a tune-up? Has the transmission been serviced? Are you running oversized tires? Etc...

I did it, but also removed the silencer in the tubing between the MAF and the TB, as it is smaller than the TB (just like the one in the fender).

Made a difference under WOT and near full load in the upper RPM range. But mine is an '02, so it has the better breathing PI heads, so not sure as to whether it would have the same effect on yours which is not PI.

Everything is stock.

Inherited it from Mom-in-Law, just going to use it as a beater. So, I don't want to spend anything unnecessarily, but $15 is nothing.

It's an expensive modification, but I'd regear the thing to 4.10 or 4.30. They gear them high for EPA tests.

Real world - the 5.4s in heavier trucks (3/4 and 1 ton) get a pretty significant increase in mileage when geared lower.

High revs won't hurt the engine, either. My experience is that the 2V modulars like to rev when towing?

I would get slightly better mileage when towing with a 01 5.4 F350 when I would shift down early and often. Pulling hills at 3500RPM yields better mileage than trying to struggle along at 2000.

It's $15 that should be spent elsewhere. Understandably you don't want to sink a bunch of money into it, but you'll need to spend a little to get everything "up to par", so to speak. As Astro said earlier though, the 4.6 in a stock Expedition with high gearing isn't going to be the fastest ride around.

"Stage 0" is often talked about before modifying a car/truck. It's the same thing I do when I induct a new vehicle (well...new to me, but used) into the fleet: baseline everything. New fluids/filters (including coolant if more than a few years old), clean TB, intake and injectors, new plugs, and ignition parts (if applicable), new accessory belt and even timing belt (again, if applicable), then I know where I am starting before driving and/or modifying said vehicle. Unless you've got all the history on this truck, you might consider starting there.

Frankly, I did very little maintenance to my Expedition (a 2000 4WD with the 5.4 and tow package) because it was the one vehicle that I've ever bought new. It rewarded my "by the book" maintenance with complete reliability. Not the best MPG, but it started and ran every time, including at -25 degrees in Vermont.

The ex kept it in the divorce, and junked it 2 years later when it was still young, 8 years old, 90K on it...I've bought cars older than that...but that's another story...
