Sounds about right, it seems like any car with "road presence" attracts the unwanted attention of jealous ******es.

The guy probably saw a shiny, bright blue BMW and thought he'd have a shot a ruining your day. He'll get his one way or another...

@OVERK1LL: No one who knows you on here would ever accuse you of trying to pretend to be "affluent" and "A poser". Why does anyone buy a car? Because they hate it? Hopefully not. Most people buy a car because they like it. You liked the M5. I liked the Cruze, my mom liked the Equinox, you get the picture. I think it is a slap in the face for the comment made to you earlier. And I agree with your sentiment, that if it had happened to me, whether I was driving my cruze, or it was back when I had the cavalier, it's the point of the thing. It's either idiocy, just being a horses patoot, or both. They certainly exist.

@hypervish: I'll be honest, I've read most of the posts you've made on here... And very few of them actually contribute anything except insulting one of the members, or being snarky to them. Maybe you should try getting a long a little better with the rest of the community?

The breaking point was the "my cars fog light costs more than your car". Who cares?

The only way to stop pebbles from hitting your car is to drive only where there are no pebbles. It going to happen.

I can't see someone intentionally kicking up gravel with the purpose of causing damage. If you drive in gravelly areas then you must expect to see some sort of damage.

It was a ratty 3rd gen Firebird with Joe Dirt behind the wheel, I think it's pretty obvious why the guy did what he did.

Should have followed him and done the equivalent in damage to his Joe Dirt mobile. Cut his tires or do something to cost him some money.

Then you have a better outlook on man and motorist than I certainly do.

I have seen this very behavior before.
I've seen much worse behavior, too.

I bet when you read about someone's nice car that was parked all the way across the lot being keyed, I hope you don't think that was accidental, either.

What he had done to his M5 is on the same level as having someone walk across the parking lot, and keying your car.

BC.

Well, then maybe you haven't read all of my posts. Please don't be so quick to judge. I say it as it is, sometimes it's a good thing other times it's not.

I think he is implying that you are a poser for buying an 11 year old BMW and pretending to be affluent.... he is not implying that your M5 is fake.

That would be an odd sentiment coming from a guy who is always preaching about only buying a car with cash and avoiding debt when possible.

The E39 was and is my favourite body style M5. It has been since 1999 when they came out. I was in a position to buy one, so I did.

I'm not "pretending" to be anything. This car is, and will be driven like it is intended to be driven. And It has THREE KID SEATS IN THE BACK. It sees a whole lot of family duty! Yes, I wash and wax it. I drove around wearing a John Deere shirt and blue jeans in it today with my wife and kids in it. I'm not pretending to be jack. I have much better things to spend money on rather than saddle myself with debt trying to pretend I can afford a $100,000 car. I bought a car that I can ENJOY DRIVING, take to Mosport when I want to, and have some FUN WITH. Isn't that what being a car enthusiast is all about?

That's why I owned the Mustang. What was I pretending to be with a hopped up Fox that I drag raced?

What's wrong with buying a more capable car with four doors that can do double duty?

And yeah, I care for my possessions. I don't think there is a guy on this board that doesn't.

hypervish: That was the most disrespectful comment I think I've ever had made to me on this board in my tenure here.

It's a TEN year old BMW that I paid a small fraction of what it would have cost new. It is a car I've always had a passion for, and yes, I do treasure it. But I don't think or pretend to think it is a Veyron, Enzo or some other "ultra elite" car. It's a freakin' SEDAN.

But yeah, it's a 400HP sedan that I respect, and I enjoy driving it! What the [censored] is wrong with that?

I would be having the same reaction if this had been the Expedition. But the outcome likely would have been a bit different.

And if you don't think anybody would do that.... You haven't met some of the guys I've met. You must live a (relatively?) sheltered life.

A guy I know was looking at a Fiero at KFC. He owned one, and had a "thing" for them. The owner came out and this guy remarked "nice car". The owner told him to get away from it. So later, buddy went out with a box cutter and chopped the logo out of the urethane front clip. I don't mean removed it from the clip, he cut a huge chunk out of the urethane with the logo on it. And that is just one small example. I went to school with a couple clowns that threw a bag of marbles off an overpass onto random cars.

A couple University students threw a shipping pallet in front of my buddy when he was driving through town.

There are a lot of really MEAN people out there that will do things just for the [censored] of it. They don't need a motive, they just get off on making other people angry. And its not like you have to worry about somebody pulling a gun on you up here.

I'm not sure what I've said to you for you to judge me the way you have, but I would like you to perhaps reconsider your evaluation.

I quite honestly don't see what I said that would have had offended you. If your referring to when I wrote your not driving a real expensive car, then well I don't know what to tell your cause that's just my personal view.

I still though don't think someone would do intentionally. But, I wasn't there to see it myself so I'll take your word for it. I guess there are just some people out there that don't respect other people's property. For example, people in parking lots opening there doors up right into our vehicles... Just not cool... LoL

I sincerely apologize to you OverK1LL I was just stating my personal opinion. I'm sorry I offended you. I'll be sure to censor myself more.

I care! the fog lights were in firing range sir! And they are expensive to replace. I could go buy an equivalent car to his for the price of the fog lights, that's what I was pointing out. I do realize that it didn't quite come out as I intended however. Nothing on a BMW is inexpensive to replace, and the "M" cars are even worse in that regard. Wear and tear is one thing, but blatant vandalism is another.

To look at it another way:

Do you get upset when you have to replace your windshield after the pitting finally gets bad enough to warrant it? No, right? it's a maintenance item. No problem.

What about tires? Do you get upset when they wear out? Again, no, they are a maintenance item. No problem.

HOWEVER

Would you get upset if somebody smashed out your windshield with a ball bat? I'm going to go out on a limb here and say yeah, you probably would right?

Would you get upset if somebody slashed your tires for the heck of it? Again, I assume yes?

The expensive is no different. It is the circumstances that make it different. I don't live in fear of stone chips, dreading that I'll get one every time I drive the car.

I did however get pretty upset when somebody decided to make a pile of them for me "for the [censored] of it".

To clarify, I've never driven where you live, but up here, many of the roads have gravel shoulders. This was one of those roads. He swerved INTO the gravel (we were almost stopped) and floored it. With an open diff, you can imagine how much gravel was kicked up. My reaction was to swerve into the oncoming lane and get around him. Which I did.

This line sir:

What part about getting upset about somebody's malicious actions toward myself and my vehicle makes me conceited?

What part about me loving my vehicles and getting upset when something happens to them makes me sound like I think it is the best vehicle ever made or most expensive?

Was it the fog light comment? If so, I was being serious. They literally ARE worth more than the car he was driving! That wasn't meant to sound the way it came out. I was just trying to put some perspective on how hideous this car was.

Are you familiar with the movie "Uncle Buck"? The car John Candy drove in that film is the type of vehicle I'm trying to paint a picture of here.

Pretty much everybody on this site has an affinity for cars and their care. That's why we are here! So I really don't understand why you took issue with me getting upset about some guy causing some potentially very expensive damage to my car.

I've never proclaimed it to be anything more than it is. I cherish it, but I don't think that is odd. I'm happy to own it. On a site like this, that shouldn't be odd either. And of course I love driving it. None of those things warrant the nature of the remark that you made.

Do you shop at Walmart? if not, start. You'll see all kinds of things happen to your car that you wouldn't expect people to do. At least up here.

Apology accepted.

Your opinion is welcome. It was the judgemental nature of your remarks and evaluation of my character that I took issue with.

Hopefully you can see where I'm coming from.

You've just destroyed my whole (I guess false, and viewed through totally rose-colored glasses) image of your country, and area.

EVERY single Canuck I've ever met, or known was; polite, kind, caring, concerned, respectful, etc.

I am NOT AT ALL questioning, or trying to refute your experience(s), but I just did not think that this type of arrogant, petty, 'peckerwood mentality' existed at all way up north.

You quite obviously ARE a serious enthusiast, and do, and WILL use your M5 as such (unlike those in MY area who use these cars, albeit brand new, as 'rolling fur coats' ONLY, and drive them slower than I can ride my bicycle), so accusing you of owning/driving one for the purpose of falsification of socioeconomic status is blatantly IDIOTIC!!

You should be credited with showing MUCH restraint, MUCH more than I could have mustered given the same situation.

Having owned a good number of very nice cars in my time. I can tell you without doubt there is a certain segment of society that will go out of their way to damage what they perceive to be something they will never have.

It may be a small segment, but they definately exist.

Unfortunately, it's true in every corner of the world. They don't have it so they hate people who have it and they intentionally destroy or damage it. But there is not much you can do about it.

If we like to go some places that I think is not very safe, we would drive the beater there rather then nicer car.

Having 35 years of adult experience behind me now and seeing the best of the best and the worst of the worst human beings .

I TOTALLY BELIEVE THAT THE GENIUS IN THE [censored] OUT FIREBIRD DID WHAT HE DID DELIBERATELY AND WITH MALICE OF FORETHOUGHT.

Essentially he saw a nice car, it made him jealous, then that made him resentful, and finally made him angry and act.

If you ever see that car again unoccupied take good care of it for the genius. OK?
