Well my 4.0L jeep is squeeling on me.. Im dumfounded though because its a motor with 9K miles and its 1 year old. It has a flowkooler water pump (new with engine) and a new fan belt was installed as well. I dont get a noise at cold start or even once its at temp. I get the noise after i drive 10+ minutes at temp. The belt has a little slack and appears to spin free and all. Ive used some belt dressing and that was a very temp solution. Does it sound like the belt is bad or something else?

I recently had an occasional belt squeal problem that I couldn't figure out for a few weeks. Didn't think it was my alternator belt because it didn't get any worse even if I turned all my power accessories on. Eventually there was a ticking noise and my alternator was covered in metal powder. Turned out the outboard bearing had seized and gradually wore the shaft down, leaving my inboard bearing to take a bending load. Eventually the bearing and shaft wore enough that the rotor did some machining to the stator.

Moral of the story: could be a sign of non-belt problems. If your belts are tight and it's still occuring, check all components that run off the belts.

yea.... my alternator went, i changed it, and the belt noise came back. it happened worse in the cold start up, belt dressing helped a little temporarily. i just changed the belt and its ok now.

Is it a V belt or a serpentine belt?

Could it be a pully out of alignment?

I have a old Chevy that did it off and on; I know how annoying it can be. Those dressings don't work long. I think mine was a pully that was not in alignment.

Could be bad belt (new or not, some aren't worth using), either idler pully, p/s pump, alternator, a/c pump, or water pump. If it goes away with a shot of dressing then it's probably just a loose belt.

Grab the belt between the p/s pump & fan with thumb & finger. If you can twist it more than 1/4 turn easily then it's too loose.

For belts I try to stick with Gates or GY Gatorback. I've had noises with a couple part-store brands.

White 03, these use serpentine belts.

Higney, my 4.0 Cherokee started a high frequency whine similiar to yours, which I've been trying to isolate. I suspect either the idler pulley or alternator bearings.

On the 4.0 alternator, the bearings are accessible enough for a shot of spray lube. I gave mine a spray of bicycle chain lube, but I haven't driven it enough yet to see if that helped.

well i spent a few minutes messing with it today... belt appears to be tight enough.. it also looks like its in good shape.. im still looking for ideas
