My boss recently purchased an original AC Cobra with a 289. The car was exceedingly expensive and original, with 1100 miles since new. The history of the car is well known, it's not a fake, a reproduction or in any way bogus. It's the real deal. It does not have the huge tires or fender flares. It's an early serial number (sorry, I could not hear what production number he said it was)

Anyway, he came by today to give me a ride. It was really interesting. First off, the engine runs well and makes 6000+ RPM without any trouble. The chassis is clearly "just barely" able to handle the HP. The skinny tires limit the cornering. But that's just as well, as the chassis, shocks and suspension obviously are not "modern spec". The ride was reasonably soft and the overall feel was that of a Brit sports car of that era. If you've driven an MG or Triumph, the Cobra felt quite similar. Especially over bumps. Compliant, but a bit "wonky".

The rate of acceleration was quite strong, and I'd guess it has about 300HP. Or, roughly the power to weight of a 600HP Camaro. But, it is geared tall, so quick launches are not easy. The car seems set up for a good top speed with the 4 speed transmission.

I was a perfectly nice day outside and a perfect ride.

The car looked much like this, without the stickers.

I "think" that version of the 289 was 306hp. At least thats what Shelby said they were. Hehe. I rode in a 66 GT350 when I was younger. I was very impressed with the 289's get up and go. This car must have had 3.73 or 4.10's in the back.

One of my favorite cars. This, the early Jaguar XKE and the 1997-2004 Corvette are my favorite cars. Love the looks.

I considered building a replica, until I researched it, they are uncomfortable, handle poorly, and hot. About all they do well is go fast in a straight line. I figured it would not replace my 1998 Corvette.

I found the car to be quite civilized. With a "good enough" ride and acceptable dynamics. It was also plenty comfortable.

I'd consider it to be "daily driver" comfortable around here in South Florida.

I'm looking forward to my next ride...

Light weight is the secret. Our family machine shop just completed a hot 289 based engine for a replica that is full of authentic NOS parts. This engine will dyno at about 425 crank HP.

I would disagree with the characterization above about their handling. Though my experiences are limited I really enjoyed my seat time in the two I have driven.

I prefer the replicas as they have upgraded some of the areas that were notorious on the originals.

Well, it was my first ride ever in a Cobra of any sort. I'm very experienced in performance driving and I've driven some very interesting cars. But never a Cobra. I guess I'm comparing it to the monsters I've driven, like the Enzo, F1, and McLaren M6b.

But, putting it another way, a well prepped Mitsubishi EVO would be much faster than this vintage Cobra around a modern race track.
