This has been an interesting read. Yes, I and most of us would always change our own oil, but...
Just thinking about my mother. She lives a few hours away. My dad passed away with cancer 9 years ago. Her only reasonable option is to have it done by "someone".

Not necessarily, On my Prizm I can get on my back "briefly" w/o jacking or ramping, reach up and spin off my filter with a simple piece of sandpaper (for grippage) in hand.

I can tell you they sure don't. Had my oil changed at JL, went in for my next oil change but I pealed off the sticker that said I had been there before. after they changed the oil, they said to me "Hey, the moron that changed your oil last time just wrapped plumbers tape around your drain plug and didn't use a washer!"
When I told him I had it changed last time at this very store he didn't have much to say.
Trixman, i am happy, and to the guy with the VW, i worked at the VW dealer, your transfluid may be pentosin, or some other type of ATF, but there is def. some other brand of ATF that will do the job fine. of course, VW uses really fine quality fluids, so i wouldn't use something other than that. I would service the car though
Have noticed a change in KieferS's attitude after time in the "trench". Perfectly allright. MANY here might have a change in supercillious (sp) know-it-all attitude if they had to deal with individualls who know more about the profession than the person who's been busting knuckles and boiling hands in hot motor oil an entire lifetime!

Hey, Friday's Plaza is facing the wrecker's ball next year... Things are changing...not just oil.
Just got back from a NYS inspection at a local Jiffy Lube. Saw on another car the tech pull the oil fill cap and put it with the oily side down on the shroud near radiator, so any dirt on the shroud would be picked up by the oily side of the cap.
Next my Suburban went in with brakes working fine. I would guess there may have been some weeping of brake fluid, but after the tech probed the brake lines with an axe or ice pick, I no longer had ANY brakes. They said there was no brake fluid in the brake fluid container. I walked across the street and bought some, filled the brake fluid container and pumped the brakes and it was dumped all over the pavement.
I had to have the Suburban towed to a local shop. While I would guess there was some weeping of brake fluid, I am not happy that I drove in with working brakes and after the inspection (I failed) had to have the vehicle towed.

Like the computer printed static cling label. Computer printing doesn't fade in the sun. And this car sat baking in the sun for some time.
Oil filter had the part number circled, two sets of initials on it, and a date, all in sharpie.
Drain plug was how I like it, snug and a tug. Probably slightly more snug than spec but no harm was done.

WE always show the filter to the camera, both the old one and the new one, incase someone decides to say we didn't do the job right. Sometimes, the manager may sign on the filter with a sharpie. Looks like you went to a good store, there are lots of them
Different questions for you, KieferS:
Do you actually use a torque wrench when putting the drain bolt on? If so, do you use the actual factory torque specs? They differ. I know my 4.6 05 Mustang has what I think is a very low factory torque spec.
