Google will be dropping support for Nest smart thermostats generations 1&2 in October 2025.
While they will still function manually for HVAC systems, there won't be any wifi connectivity or control.
I just installed a generation 1.4 in our beach house last fall and bought the matching mounting plate.
Pretty disappointing.
No more Google home devices for me.
I'm picking up a Honeywell basic Wi-Fi thermostat on sale at Lowe's for $40.
I've had two before and they are rock solid

We have seen that in many products last few years. Everything from vacuums to speakers. Next we will have a bricked $1,500 dish washer because some company doesn't want to support all the advertised features.

Probably true. I'm selective about smart home products. I don't need to know what's in my refrigerator from 50 miles away nor do I need to start a staged load of wash while I'm sitting on the beach. But I do like setting the temperature in our beach house an hour or three before we arrive.

Thanks for the heads up, Cropduster.
Where can I look to determine the generation of my Nest Thermostat?

It's also funny that the 'mounting plate' will be proprietary too.

While I want to be mad at google they are known for this and nest gen 1 came out in 2011.. that's a good run for google.

I just replaced my gen 2 last year with an ecobee 4.. Works about the same except to turn on the furnace fan only is about 4 menus instead of 1

Thanks for the heads up, Cropduster.

The display screens are all different is the easiest way.
otherwise the model might be on the back if you pop it off the wall (takes 2sec)

Im using the Google Home app and if you go into settings, it's listed under Technical Information.

i had the nest thermostat wasn't aware that they would just drop support totally where Wi-Fi functionality wouldn't work. i thought i read awhile back that google had a rebranding of the google nest and google home app. however there may still be a way to control the nest t-stat through Amazon's Alexa as long as the nest has wi-fi connectivity. since i am not a heavy google user i had done away with the nest and installed the Sensi-lite which has been pretty solid.

Being I love electronics, I REALLY tried to want something else. However we chose the Honeywell T5 WiFi
One reason being there was a T5 Z Wave installed by the builder but I got rid of it, as it was tied into the builder supplied Ring security system that I removed from the house once Amazon started to charge a monthly fee. Replaced with Simply Safe no fee.

Anyway our electric Co-Op gave us an option for almost any brand at no cost. After checking them all out for a stupid long period of time I went with the Honeywell T5 WiFi version no longer tied to any pay service and it was simple plug and play using the same wall plate. (I found the Sensi-lite mentioned by @factorytuned2012 very attractive too)

Electric company supplied the stat and the installation. Love its simplicity and I use it extensively for programming ect.
I also like on some cooler nights the option for "CIR" fan. where the fan doesnt stay on but will turn on every so often to level out temps all in the rooms if the AC or heat isnt needed.

It's been almost a year now, rock solid, no complaints. Looks nice too I think/

The 3rd gen looks like a 2nd gen but it has a blue bubble level on the backplate. I just confirmed mine is a 3rd gen, I wonder how many years it has left?

Google unfortunately kills off a lot of their products and projects, IMHO, much earlier than they should, especially for being such a large company:

Everyone needs a T-stat with a mind of it's own, spyware and links to Chi-com via their wifi router.
I still miss our first microwave. Two dials. One for power level, and one for time.

I don't need or want anything more complicated than a manual thermostat. Besides, no matter what thermostat we have the wife will turn the heat up to maximum cause she thinks the furnace works faster that way.

This is the one that I've had before. I'm picking it another while it's on sale. I have an Ecobee in our primary home. It's ok but too many bells and whistles.View attachment 277084
This is actually a really reliable thermostat. Our last house of 16 years had two, one on each floor. I still kind of like it as I like physical buttons. Ours however in the last home did not have the WiFi version.

A sibling literally just replaced the exact non WiFi version with the Wifi Version.

I have that issue with the nest. Trying to change anything manually is difficult so I just do everything with the app. I may leave it in for the summer and then yank it.
