Goodbye M1

Yes it was for price...At about 21 bucks for a 5 quart jug of M1 5w30 and at 12 for Wal-Mart syn...that adds up over time it is almost two to one....

I have used m1 syn alot.. mostly T&S 5w-40, regular 5w-30, and some 0w-40.

The 5w-30 was really noisy in my 02 ranger 4.0 engine. The T&S and 0w-40 arent.. Ive had 50,000+ miles on m1 but the next 2 oil changes are PP
because of the 2.19$/qt I paid for it vs 4-5/qt for m1. After that I'll probably go with the 15qts of
valvoline maxlife syn I have stashed... My Dad and
grandma happened to get some free

What do you say to these replies, buster ?

Any person who knows metals, wear & lubrication would know that tapping noise in an engine isn't doing it any good or helping it last longer.

I know my car was loud using M1. Switched to GC and it got quieter. Now I have Exxon Superflo and it's still quiet. I know I wont be using M1 anymore because of the noise issue. I know it is an excellent oil, and if it weren't for the noise I'd continue to use it. But, I decided that for my driving conditions, it don't really make sence to use synthetic. I'm just gonna run dino in it. Happens to run pretty smooth on dino so I'm good

in my life time the only oil I have ever seen seperate in the can was Pennsoil!! never will or have ever used it!! Granted that was back in the late sixtys and I'm sure they've improved on their oils since than but Pennsoil is not for me!! thats my oil logic and I'm staying with M1!!(besides it's going to be a long-long-long while before I need to buy anymore being I've only got around 175++ qts left in my stock)

Hi bighead,

That's good that it's better with whatever dino you're using. I originally had the GM oil causing the loud tapping in it which motivated me to try the PP and that's when it went away.

I'll probably pull the M1 out earlier and try the Amsoil to see if that is noisy or not. I hope not...

tpitcher I can't speak for anyone else but I'm not trying to put anyone down. But if someone is going to make a blanket statement that product "A" is better than product "B" with no supporting data then they should be challenged to back up the claim with something resembling evidence.A handful of posters, Goldenrod included, like to toss out meaningless posts and then put a little bouncy icon or a smiley face at the end of it. These posts always lack merit and contribute nothing to the discussion.

I KNOW that Porsche uses it...Mercedes, Aston too
But I'd think a bit before trying it, that is, if I were you
So that you don't find yourself with an engine cooked "well done"
All because you wouldn't listen to warnings about using Mobil 1

Hi gudmund,

Yea, back in the 70's I had similar experiences with pennzoil and will never use regular pennzoil ever again either! It caused sludge in my GTO!

Glad you don't hear the tapping - mine was so loud I could hear it over a moderate volume radio !!

o, you were changing M1 at 3000 miles? that makes sense then. i just assumed you were dumping it every 5000 miles.

Hi farrarfan1,

Wasn't you, he knows who he is.

I had facts and stated them.

GM oil = loud tapping every day when cold.

Tried M1 = loud tapping every day when cold.

Tried PP = No more loud tapping any day for the whole 5,000 miles.

Tried M1 again for a confirmation run = loud tapping every day for the last 3,500 miles when cold.

For this scenario, happenning to me or any other concerned individual, they would most likely stop using the M1.

All,

I'm just a regular guy who changes my own oil and am relating my observations to you. My comment regarding bigot simply means that I loved M1 for ~20 years and was always quick to recommend M1 to others based on my experience. The main reason for my discontent is that I seam to have the same issue with both of my vehicles. Is this a scientific fact based study of M1? No, it's simply my initial observation after having tried another synthetic oil. Apparantly others have noticed engine noise with M1 so it's not like I am alone on this issue. Last time I checked there was no requirement to state an observation on this forum. I also did not see a requirement for 6-Sigma quality data or degree in chemical engineering. That's why I stated that it is an observation. I just want a quality synthetic oil and if, that is if Exxon Mobil is cutting corners they have one less customer to f$$k.

diginnc,

Good one - you a six sigma guy like me?

DMAIC (Define - Measure - Analyze - Improve - Control) ??? Process Excellence ?

If so, we gotta compare notes sometime on the general/off topic forum !!!

Tpitcher- Your findings make perfect sense to me and doesn't need really any more debate. Your engine makes a tapping noise with M1 and does not with PP...why would anyone argue that point?
dunno.gif

If my engine made a tapping noise with a particular oil and not with another you bet your bibby that the oil that made noise in my engine would not find it's way back in there...

I do agree that if not all oils are compatible in every engine, even of the same make. And if one oil makes my engine sound better to me, then all the better. But I doubt the quality of the oil has been degraded. It just does not work in my engine to my satisfaction would probably be a better assessment.. And I do respect that and it is a viable opinion. That is what sells products, your perception/happiness with that product. I would venture to say that 95% of the oil buying public does not know what a tech data sheet on oil is or a MSDS.

Let's let this one rest.
