It's far easier and more convenient than calling. You also do not necessarily have to interrupt what you are doing to do it. Or far less than you would to call. Also it's just easier than calling. Why do people talk via IM on the computer? Or chat rooms? Or forums? Same kind of things. Also text messages are far more private than a phone call.

It's not the occasional, convenient text, I'm talking about the obsessive texting....

I was too. Texting isn't for me but in some of the legit scenarios mentioned in this thread it is fine. However, as you said those who are obsessed with it is what I am talking about. Also fair to point out most seem obsessed with it. Especially the youths.

Criminals.

Verizon sucks, but they tend to lower the bill in situations like this. Call and complain, if it doesn't work, try again. When I had them, I was able to get them to change the plan and back date it. So you can get a 1500 text plan or unlimited plan back dated which will save you some money. I'd give it a shot, I did it several times when my son was on our Verizon plan. It all depends on how willing you are to persist, and who you get on the line when you call Verizon. Like I said if you're not happy with the outcome of the first call to them, try again. Good luck!

My first experience with Verizon was my last. We had 3 phones on a plan with shared minutes. We had 900 minutes per month, and my wife used the majority of the minutes because of her work. About half way thru the contract, Verizon decided that each phone only got 300 minutes causing my wife to go over. We fought it thru an arbitrator and won, but I'll never deal with them again.
I have a neighbor that has 4 kids. Apparently Verizon's newest trick is charging pictures that you send and receive via text to the data plan. As you can imagine with 4 kids, the data overage is very costly just on text.
I'll go without a cell phone before I ever give Verizon business again.

T-Mobile or an unlocked Nexus on Straight Talk is the way to go.

Verizon coverage is excellent, but I am not so sure it's worth the premium (for me).
