Got the cell phone bill this month and it was $40 more than it should have been.

I pay $5 a month for a 250 text messages.

My mother got a phone in July. They managed to remove my data plan and put it on her "dumb" phone.

This month, the bill is $40 higher. Apparently they got rid of my texting plan.

Criminals.

Been saying that for years. Texting is the #1 most marked up consumer product - why would you even give them the chance to charge you excessively for it?

That's the reason I dumped them years ago. My dad's cell phone just died and he has a good plan. So I told him to renew the 2yr contract and get a basic phone. He did this last Friday. They put him on a prepaid plan with the same amount of minutes but no free nights and weekends. Now I have to explain to him the difference and try to un-due the mess up.

That's why I had the $5 plan with 250 messages a month. I rarely text, but everyone seems to text me.

They ... just randomly ... got rid of the 250 plan and I had to pay something like $50 a text message.

I didn't willingly get rid of the texting plan.

When the contract is up, I'm done with them.

Same with my TW cable.

go to page plus and call it a day. For 40.00 you get unlimited minutes and texts and 500mb data (3g not 4g). All using verizon network. Just bring your old verizon phone to them.
We dumped sprint paying for 2 lines 150 after tax to pageplus paying only 80 .

I have never had Verizon renig on a contract. I would fight that if I were you.

I actually have used Verizon now for 10+ years. Hands down they have the best reception around here. All cell plans rape you so I go with the best reception.

Maybe they just screwed up.

WHY do people text anyway..???

I absolutely do not understand the OBSESSION.

It's an absolute EPIDEMIC.

Cheaper than a call. On my prepay it costs 0.3 units, rather than a unit per minute.

I kinda like texts, it is a bit like email respond when I want to. Less informal too, and less likely to take up much of my time.

Then again I send like three a month.

I love it!

That fits the company I work for to a "T"...

AMEN! What drives me nuts are when you see 2 kids sitting next to each other texting or when you see someone walking down the street, in a store, etc... and they are completely engrossed in their little phone, texting, while being completely oblivious to the world around them. I hate it when you ask someone a question and they sort of half respond as they are mesmorized by their phone and texting too. I want to grab their phone and throw it.

My 2 nieces did the whole sit next to each other and text thing at our last family get together. I complained to the parents who said they tried to stop them but had no luck. I shook my head, walked over, grabbed the phones and took them away. I then said you can have them back when you leave. If you have something to say to each other try TALKING to each other. No texting is allowed in my house.

Man did they protest at 1st but they got over it quick enough.

That's the whole point of texting, kids can sit in the back seat of a car prattling on to their friends about how boring their parents are without the parents overhearing.

Some text messaging plans cost more per megabyte than getting data off the Hubble Space telescope.

It's far easier and more convenient than calling. You also do not necessarily have to interrupt what you are doing to do it. Or far less than you would to call. Also it's just easier than calling. Why do people talk via IM on the computer? Or chat rooms? Or forums? Same kind of things. Also text messages are far more private than a phone call.

I work in a big cylinder made of thick, thick steel.

Where I live, it might as well be the same, the reception is so bad.

Calls drop frequently, and sometime there is no signal at all where I am, though texts will always find a way through...

I text people in my [insert business-related group here] all the time to check in, verify information and confirm appointments. There is no misunderstanding or forgetting, and a text can be reread at a later time or date in case I do forget.

I can text or bbm my wife and walk by a spot where there is reception and it will get through. busy, busy, busy, stress, stress, stress; receiving a brief text from my wife -- all better.

WHY DO SOME PEOPLE NOT GET WHY TEXTING HAS ITS BENEFITS? Oh, Em, Gee, we're not all playing games and texting our bff's, lol.

I've had verizon for about a decade now, and while I'd love to leave them, there's no better choice for my needs.

Sounds to me like your contract is up NOW, seeing as how they changed your plan without notification!

+1 - plenty of times I am in a meeting and need to answer something and can do it discreetly via text instead of having to walk out of the meeting or interrupt it. It has its place, but like everything else can be abused.

To the OP, Verizon has the best network of all carriers. We recently went through an RFQ process with AT&T, Sprint, T-Mobile, and Verizon and consistently and throughout the country Verizon won hands down for network availability and bandwidth. Is it possible they made a mistake, sort of like the one that AT&T made when we made a change to our account that resulted in a similar snafu?

Why not just call them and explain the mistake? They clearly made an error and should own up to it. Not sure why you jumped to conclusions so fast.
