We will be doing a few off-road trails soon in Colorado and I want to capture 4K video of the drive. I have a Ram-Mount Trackbar on the dash and a mount for the camera (1/4" stud).

What camera is everyone using these days? Thanks in advance for your thoughts.

hd video is outdated you want fhd, wqhd or uhd.
what is your budget.
ok around $65, good ~~130, best? 400+

one of the most important considerations is not to get reflections from dash etc.

blackvue has some of the highest quality dash cams.. front and rear.

but if you are using a stud mount you might need a go pro camera or similar..

most dash cams mount to window with adhesive or suction cup.

I have the Rexing V3. It's 1080P forward and aft facing cameras. Shows the occupants with seatbelts on (to help avoid unnecessary seatbelt citations when the seat belt is removed to access wallet)

I don't claim the video quality is the best of the best, but it's good enough to capture close license plates, drivers faces, crashes and so on. Whether it's what you need is another matter. Maybe you should use an actual GoPro camera, any of the models from the very first GoPro, to the latest ones produce fantastic video quality.

The post above is correct, HD video is outdated. However a high quality HD video made with excellent quality equipment is still superb.

I should have said 4K to prevent confusion. Go Pro 8 has bad reviews from what I have read--freezing, battery issues, etc.

$300ish is within range.

So is adhesive mount to window ok? do you want front and back or just front.. are you set on using that stud mount? or does not matter.
UHD front facing only with h.265 compression is doable in your budget.
dual cams start around $400.

Just front is fine and yes, stud mount is preferred since suction can slip and do not really want adhesive.

ezvis s6 for budget option.

not see much "dash cams" that support a threaded mount.

you might consider 1080p@60hz might look good enough (or better in some cases than 4k@30hz.

also if you do get uhd make sure it has h.265 or you are going be recording hundreds of GB.
