Can someone recommend a good auto error code reader. One that can read and clear codes. I have a nice one now but it will not work on newer vehicles like 2017 and above.

Why will your reader not read about 2017? Newest car I have is 2019, but all my readers work on all my cars.

I would suggest a cheap dongle - and either Torque Pro for Android or 4 -stroke for Apple. The whole thing will set you back maybe $30.

I’m a fan of OBDlink MX+ it works great with their OBDlink app.
I wanted to gripe because my obdlink MX isnt supported "that I just bought".
I looked it up and I bought it in 2012.. ugh. oh well.
Still a nice step up from generic chinese adapters.

The OBD 2 code scanner I have is 2002 vintage. When I plug it into the 2017 RAV4 it comes up and tells me operator error. It works on our 1997 Explorer, I believe it is to old to work with newer vehicles. Is ODB 2 still a standard or has newer versions come out.

OBD 2 is still the standard.

Torque Pro app for 5 bucks and a $10 Amazon BT dongle.
This is the best option for codes, clearing, and even some live data.

As a "level up" from there I purchased the $49.98 dongle from WalMart, HyperTough HT500. It did great for what it was, and went beyond the basic functions of previous option. It's great for a DIYer, sees and clears some other modules too. Here is what it's able to do:

But then I lost it, and ended up shelling out for a used Innova 7111 ScanTool. Learning it now.

I bought the HT-200, which is really just an Autel AP-200. Very powerful little tool.
