Going to sit for a while...syn/blend/dino?

Been thinking about this one. With everything that I have going on right now, I've decided I'm going to park my Cavalier for a few months. (In my nice new garage

) It's out driving a bunch right now until I park it at the end of next month. Before that, it will get a few things done, including an oil change.

After I dump the current fill of Quaker State Ultimate Durability, I've debated about either either just putting in more Quaker State Ultimate Durability, or just grabbing a cheaper blend (AC Dexos/kendal/service pro), or a simple dino like Quaker State Advanced Durability or Pennzoil conventional. The car will be warmed up and driven for a local run, but that's pretty much it.

Around the last time it had to sit for a little while, I ran Mobil 5000 with no issues. But I think learning too much about oil is really making me over think this...

I'd just throw more syn in it because it's all I have...maybe it's just the urge to play it safe like last time...

Just throw dino in it and run it out to a shorter OCI (5k miles or so). Letting it sit, worst that can buildup is maybe moisture in the oil.

Thats what I'd do.

For storage, how about whatever is cheapest then change it again shortly after you put it back into service? If cost is no real concern here maybe look for a high TBN or a high cold viscosity that would maybe not be what you'd normally want.

The cheapest major conventional on sale will be more than adequate.

I agree with you all. Cheap, cheap, cheap cause it technically wont be driven with that oil. The main concern is the acids in the oil from combustion that will eat away the metals, so i hear.

Try to get some free oil to put in it

I'll change the tune here...

If the car will ve sitting for a long, long, time, corrossion becomes an issue.

I'd get an inexpensibe HDEO 10w30, which has a higher amount of anti-corossion additives in it to protect the engine.

Actually, that's not a bad idea.

Nope, the car should not be sitting for more than a few months. It's more for getting things in order after purchasing our home, as I'm going to have very little time to drive it. Will also help the odd insurance issue I have too. Car will still be started as often as I can get out to the garage, and I'll try to at least get it around the block a few times as well.


Other than that, it will just sit.

Unless you move to Nome in january or somewhere in Antarctica sitting for a couple months does not hurt anything engine-related in a normal car. Maybe a battery in Death Valley?

This trend to believe that by not driving a car every day it is going to self-grenade is typical O/C paranoia at its worst.

Kinda' like the parents who wipe the chains on the swingsets, the front door handle, etc. with baby-wipes...

What's next: the baseball bat and the ball in T-League?

This. It does not matter as the oil will sit in the sump anyways and it will drain off parts. B4 I went to Iraq for 6 months I parked my car in my garage and when I came back I did not start it, I changed the oil and filter and primed the oil b4 firing up.
