Going to Bar Harbor, Maine in the last week of August. I have never been to that area before. Quick research on web shows lots of good eating, hiking, sightseeing in the area. Any other things I should see or do?

Beautiful state. They do appreciate the money ..but don't let the door hit you in the behind on the way out after Labor Day.

Maine landmarks also appear in Oregon in "Stand by Me"... Royal River, Togus mental hospital...

Iced tea and popovers in the afternoon at the Jordan Pond House in Acadia National Park.

Whale watch boat trip.

There's some local boat trips to the nearby islands that are worth checking out.

There's another boat trip (I think it was out of one of the other harbors, not Bar Harbor) that had a Park Ranger on it, a naturalist trip, that was good. I remember seeing this incrediably tall Osprey nest.

Of course there's always lobster, if you like lobster (not my bag but my wife and son loved it).

Thanks for the replies gentlemen. I do love Lobster and I plan on eating at least my body weight of the stuff during the 8 days that I am there.

I spend 4 summers in central Maine on Embden Pond as a teenager. Deep sea fished out of both Bah Habah and Booth Bay. Back then it was $100 for a 6 man party and you could catch between 400-1200lb of Cod (among other things ..a sea robin or two) ..and if the water was too rough to lay anchor, you didn't pay (or if you asked soon enough, you could go for tuna or something that you could troll for).

Anyone been to Baxter State Park? I imagine it's paved now, but when I went there it was about 100 miles (or so it seemed - maybe more) of high grade dirt road. You would drive for about 30 miles and you would come upon a sign that read "This road is passable, but not approved. Proceed at your own risk". The thing is the last turn was 30 miles back. Wood chords lined the road ..probably from the clearing for the road. That was 35 years ago ..so much has surely changed.

One thing you have to realize, roadsigns in New England are cryptic at best. The locals know where they're going, tourists are on their own.

I agree about RI. Was there for a week in 1992. Got as far north as Boston for an afternoon game at Fenway.

And yes I will be a far cry from West Texas. That is the whole point. The best kicker is that my employer is paying the tab.
