I want to take the lady out to a very nice restaurant for dinner Saturday night. Steak or Italian is preferred. Any recommendations? We're staying power n lights district area.

I would recommend Pierpont's at Union Station for steak or Lidia's at the Freight House district for Italian. Call for reservations. Lidia's also does a nice Sunday brunch.

I don't frequent the Power and Light district, but several of the restaurants in that area have closed. I don't know what the current configuration of offerings are there.

The two I mention above are long-standing quality places. You are about a mile or so from Union Station, the Freight House district and Crown Center. There is a pedestrian bridge that connects Union Station with the Freight House restaurants, going over the tracks, allowing access to both locations. Crown Center is within walking distance using different pedestrian bridge walkway.

There are several of us who can answer questions about KC, so feel free to ask.

Jackstack BBQ is also at the Freight House, and it has excellent BBQ.

I would say the MetropolitanKC for steak.

For Italian and pizza, the Pizzaria at the Shopping center West of town at Parallel Parkway and 435. Cabela's is just a stone's throw away.

What? You're not coming over to CR for some fine cuisine?

P&L is an awesome area. The Plaza has more than enough excellent choices, so I will let a KCMO-local chime in here.

Definitely avoid the original KC Masterpiece -- way overrated.

LOL. You know CR was rated like the 29th best place to live in the US??? Can you believe that?

Cabela's is about 30-40 mins west of downtown, on the Kansas side. It is part of the Legends shopping complex, near the Kansas Speedway. I live about eight miles west of it.

Not sure KC Masterpiece still has any restaurants open, anymore. The suburban one closed several years ago. For BBQ, you can't go wrong with Arthur Bryant's (Prospect or Legends locations) or Gates (multiple locations including downtown on Main). Needless to say, there are also several other local BBQs that are worth visiting also. KC Masterpiece was always low on my list.

Yes, that's the one. All kinds of good restaurants out there.

Unfortunately for me, the rest of my family is vegetarian. That limits the amount of steak houses I frequent. Capitol Grille was good (plaza area). OK Joes is also excellent for BBQ. For pizza, we like Minskys, Waldo Pizza, Spin. There's lots of good Mexican food was well.

Stay clear of areas ~2 miles East of downtown, or plaza. Streets like Independence Avenue, Troost, Prospect, Highland Ave, should be avoided. You should be fine in P&L, or Legends. (I also never go to P&L, but have not read of anything lately). If you drive from P&L to Legends, stay on the freeway (I-70). There are places in KCK to avoid as well.

What part of IA are you coming from? My family is in Spirit Lake.

Have a fun, safe trip.

This is so funny to hear. Having grown up in south KC, those streets used to be the places to go! Of course, this was back in the 70's/early 80's.

But best off staying away from any of the southern parts now, especially places like Raytown or Grandview. Went downhill bad.

^ Yes -- I was going to mention them as well, but I didn't figure too may tourists would want to visit Grandview, Rusken Heights, Blue Ridge Cutoff/Bvld. , etc....too many to list.
