Go 10K, or not go 10K ??

Pennzoil dino made over 7K...would M1 0w-20 be able to crack the 10K mark w/o being completely spent in this application?

If not, then is the additional cost of a synthetic worth it? Or, 3,000 more miles will have cost you how much more?

To me, if I didn't think a synthetic would gain me at least 3k, I sure wouldn't have sprung for it. But that's just me.

I also understand trying different oils just for the sake of trying them.

I see no good reason why it wouldnt be able to...

Mostly highway driving...say a 80/20 mix. The two factors that concern me is this engine's propensity to throw higher insolubles and wear down TBN prematurely.

LC and FP have helped those two variables in this application in the past.

Are you using any oil on your Saturn? Just curious.
 
I wouldn't go 10k in your car with that mileage without first verifying the condition of the engine. A lot of blowby or fuel dilution would nullify any extended drains with any oil. I'd run to 5k and run a UOA to see what's what with your engine. Then, you can decide what to do. I used to own a 1992 SL2 loaded and ran Mobil 1 at 5k intervals. When I sold the car in 1994 it had 48,000 miles and was as tight as ever - other Saturns with similair miles already had the valve problems and such. That little SL2 was a nice car, wish I kept it.
 
This engine uses about 1/2qt of 20wt every 3K. 30wt (and higher) oils the oil consumption is negligible. Plus there's a slow valve cover gasket leak that I didn't fix right the first time. Not much leaks, but it needs to be fixed when the weather gets warmer.

I took the valve covers off at 166K or so, photos and video in the photo section. Squeaky clean!

I have always been staunchly warned not to go with long OCI on the S-series Saturns. timing chain life and other items are very much affected by these cars. A guy on the Saturn Fans forum has in his signature, "Old Saturns never die, they get run low on oil" or something to that effect. Most I will go on the SL1 is 5000 miles. Mine doesn't use any oil as the engine is too young 66,000. Oil burning in the future is in the back of my mind though with these engines.
 
I do 5k OCI (I mainly follow the OLM which usually goes off around that interval).
 
one time to 10k with UOA would not totally destroy an engine. I would test it and see if it comes back good. since it's winter, I would lean on side of caution though.
 
I do not trust OLM, it's just a program. 10K is EASILY attainable with M1. UOA's have proven that.
 
I have read that the GM OLM system is solid and well thought out. There was a thread I saw here where a guy who worked on the system answered questions about it. I only use the OLM as a guide anyway. I will take the computer's advice, but I have the ultimate say.
 
Why not?

I rarely change the oil more often than every 7500 miles in my SL2. It has never seen a drop of synthetic oil; it has always used $0.49/qt 5w30 conventional and either Fram or Purolator filters. The operating conditions consist of trips that are usually under five miles as well.

When I removed the valve cover shortly before 100k miles, it was cleaner than yours. Of course, I average 1 qt every 2-3k miles as far as consumption goes.

The GM OLM system makes no adjustment for mechanical shortfalls or equipment in a state of disrepair. Any known issues I would fix before attempting the feat you just described.
