I have a 2011 GMC 1500 with a 4.8L engine that I recently purchased after changing the engine oil with the recommended amount of engine oil I'm way over full. I swab off the dip stick (though maybe the incorrect one) but still over full a lot I drained the oil and install 5L (less then what's recommended) and it's still over full by what looks to be a 1/2L-3/4 L
I tried 2 different dip stick does any have any idea why?

Check the owner's manuals of a few years near yours (+ / -) and see if the stated capacity is the same/similar.
If so, and that's what you used, then I'd say the dipstick is incorrect.

The 2011 with the 4.8 and 4 speed is an amazing combination. Hope the oil pan isn't so full of sludge that it's displacing the oil and it likely isn't. The 4.8, 5.3, and 6.0 blocks are the same in respect to oil and capacity so I believe it has the wrong dip stick. It may have been forgotten or somehow broken and had another reinstalled that isn't the right one. Regardless these engines take 6 quarts but I've been adding an extra quart with no ill effect so I don't have to add oil during the interval.

Yeah I've done an '09 4.8 4wd and pretty sure it was 6qts

AFAIK no domestic fullsize truck has used less than 6 since the 2nd Gen Ram Magnums (which survive surprisingly well on 5 qts)

I tried 2 different dip sticks
1 from a 08 and the original from a 11 both are the same length i have had several 4.8L in the past they all told 6L I'm leaning towards the wrong dip stick tube
Just wondering if anyone else has seen the same issue

Thanks

Just dump 6 quarts in and drive it for 20 mins and see if the oil on the stick looks like it has tiny bubbles or even foam develop. I doubt it will but just to be sure. If there's neither of that then it's not overfilled. An engine that's over filled will exhibit those two and if it's very over filled it'll start smoking out the tailpipe.

Look up an online photo of the dip stick tube and how it's positioned in the engine bay and compare it to yours. It may be a different tube.

As for oil these engines love 40 grade so get that next time if you want. I run 15w-40 in mine but it's warm down here. If it gets cold where you're at use 0/5w-40.

Sounds like adding six quarts is correct, and that the dipstick and/or dipstick tube is the wrong part or is at providing a wrong reading. I would change the oil and filter, add six quarts, run the engine, and later check it cold on level ground. I would then assume the level shown is correct, and would mark the dipstick accordingly.

If you wanted to get fancy, you could do five quarts first, so you would also have a "one quart low" mark, and then add the 6th quart.

i’m guilty of knowing oil capacities of the vehicles i service and just dumping that amount in. i don’t check the stick normally after filling with the correct amount.

It’s 6 quarts with the oil filter.

I changed the oil on so many of these in trucks and Vans and all were 5.7L/6qts. Always checked the level after though to be sure.
