Protonmail its Swiss based and adheres to Swiss privacy laws.
I use GMAIL for general and proton mail for bank and other financial.
I am careful not to use Proton mail for anything where the company might sell my information. So far no SPAM.
I also use GMAIL app on phone and Thunderbird on laptop. No browser with its annoying ads.

Personally I'd use gmail. Yahoo has really gone downhill and the speed of the mail sent / received are much slower than gmail, plus gmail account can be integrated with other google account (for sharing with teachers and other school activities, etc) much easier.
I do have a Yahoo account I use because it has my first and last name on it, I couldn't get the same thing for gmail (too many people uses it I guess).

Fake news. Yahoo "maybe" linked to Japanese, but it is blocked in China like most foreign internet stuff. The US part of Yahoo is owned by some private equity.

You should be able to change your name in gmail. I have changed my name numerous times in gmail settings.
Well I use Gmail all the time, got my account back in 2004. Only drawback is their 15 gig limit. I spend a few hours every few month going through my email and trying to prune a few hundred gigs til it fills up again in another few months. Yahoo mail has an unlimited/1 terabyte limit.
I think he's referring to the actual email address. You can change your name in gmail settings but that won't change your email address.
It's one reason I got my email address back in 2004, was able to get the name I wanted as they all hadn't been taken up yet. Only drawback is that you get a lot of spam and also people with similar names to you end up sending you mail.
I use Gmail and Yahoo. I also have a Protonmail account. If only one was available I'd take Gmail.
