Kevin Williams, VP of GM North American Quality is the source.

Last year GM hired Toyota exective Tatsuhiko Yoshimura once he retired from Toyota. He was the most significant person in developing Toyotas Validation process. He has been prodding GM to change it's validation methods. Currently GM on test to warranty millage limit. Tatsuhiko has been trying to make them understand that if the tests are validated to failure and then redesigned to last the useful life of the car it's durability and reliability will natural follow. He thinks that the first step in make a quality product is makeing it durable for it's entire life expectency not just the warranty period. He claims that initial quality will also go up.

Mr. Williams explains that this is a huge "culture shift" for GM. THey are also looking at 33 key items that affect 75% of their warranty costs.

They are also trying to use their global parts bin more.

These are all good things!!! Looks like their might be hope for the General!!

Sure was nice of GM to test to at least their millage warranty for validation purposes!! Nothing like giveing the customer to much durability!

THis is a repost as my previous post vanished. I did not recieve a message from Bob or any of the Admin.'s so I assumed it was safe to repost! This is not meant to agitate. It is only meant to stir some gentle disscusion. The origanal article appeared in Auto News but this same information was published a year ago internaly!

This is good news, though it is rather scarry to think that GM has not previously been working in this way!

I bet that intake manifold related failures are one of the top warranty cost items!

The right way to reduce warranty costs is to make the products better. The wrong way is to harass customers in hopes of avoiding paying. Sadly all of the car companies use the harassment process at least sometimes.

When I tryed to access it earlier the title was their but it would not come up when I clicked on it. It told me that that topic did not exsist. I figured it was just an error so I tryed to repost from memory.

Sorry for all the typo's. I was trying to rush it in between commercials for the last episode of Friends!
