Interesting to see them teaming up again for transmissions, lots of collaboration in the industry today.
Looks like we are going to single speed engines.

Well, this is a post of the type which we haven't really seen for a while. I used to feel kind of the same, but not quite so extreme. I'm much more moderate than I was now though, heck I owned a Japanese built Mazda CX-5. I still prefer to buy "american" but I'm not quite as militant about it as I used to be =|

I guess they will have to stop building "American" cars in Canada and Mexico, then.

I just looked and drove a new ford escape SEL with a lot of options. Not impressed with the quality of it. Sync was slow and unresponsive. interior driver's door handle felt loose and cheap, wind noise at moderate speed and felt twitchy at speed. over $33,000. This did not beat out the Hyundai Santa fe sport i looked out. i would like to by an american car to replace our explorer but Just not yet apparently.

I understand american cars are build in Canada and Mexico, i just feel american car makers should beat out the competition
. The Way Ford And GM sre bringing cars in people will soon depend on them like they once did.

What intrigues people on purchasing a Toyota, Nissan, Mazda or any other [censored] car? Many claim the Reliability but is that really what they tbink of when signing the papers of ownership? What makes someone choode a Lexus ovrr a Cadillac? Just a thought and no bad intentions

With all the global platforms in use,you could have a Chevy badge in the U.S.,but it's a Daihatsu made in Mexico or a Fiat platform and a Dodge badge....it goes on and on.

Yes, a lot of people think about the reliability- or what they've heard anyway. Why do people choose lexus over a caddy? Well to be completely frank, though a lot of Lexus are considered bland and for "old people", cadillac up until the CTS and ATS cultivated that image to an even more extreme degree.

Not to mention until said recent CTS and ATS cadillac hasn't really had anything competetive with Lexus, BMW, etc. And that's the truth. Neither has Lincoln (still doesn't, imo), or Buick (again, until recently).

The perception is slowly changing, but for years American cars had perception of poor quality, poor interior and poor reliability. A reputation not completely without merit too, when you think about it.

Why do people buy the camry? Because it is everywhere. It's a recognized nameplate. It's a toyota, which deserved these days or not, still has a reputation for reliability. That speaks nothing of how bland and wallpaper paste the Camry is, and compared to a lot of other cars, is actually quite boring and mediocre. But people buy well priced, mediocre cars.

Different automakers and models appeal to different people.

Didnt american cars rule the world in the 70s wasnt it until the 80s and 90s were the cars were built as if they just wanted cars out and didnt care hos they csme out.

Imo im.no where near the income to purchase a lexus, a cadillac, lincoln, or bmw. Im just 21 but if i had the chance to choose a vehicle i would go with a Lincoln MKS then a Dodge Challenger but i just idk dont people feel weird that they buy the away teams product? I have nothing agaidnt people buying what ever brand make and model car they buy. But me ad i stated i always wsnt to drive american brand cars.

I dont think they go and say

"This Corolla seems more reliable than this new fusion" i mean what does reliable mean? Make the car keep running without any maintenance work? If yoy keep checking your vehicle for any little issue and fix it im sure any car can be reliable in todays time

6 speed is the max for me. I drove a few 8 speed AT's and hated them. They shift too much, and feel like they're lugging at times. 9-10 speed its not for me.

There are a few members who have some ridiculously high mileage vehicles with little to no repairs. Bill in Utah comes to mind, with his 290k Corolla.

Also no, I actually didn't feel weird/guilty when I bought my Mazda for buying a foreign car. It wasn't even US built, it was 90% Japan Content assembled in Japan. I used to have the same viewpoint as you, as most BITOG members can attest.

If I were to buy any car? I'd buy a Dodge Charger R/T or SRT8. An early 00s BMW M3 maybe. A Jeep. But to be honest, it's getting harder and harder to argue that the anti foreign car viewpoint is that valid. Yeah some of the profit and tax goes to the other country. But it's not the same way that it used to be. Global market and global economy make that kind of thinking a little outdated to be completely honest.

EDIT: I'm well aware of the irony guys. I'm just waiting for the posts commenting on it :|

When you look at the entire lineup, the domestic parts content doesn't even come close with your average toyota.

I'm the same way, though I've even drove 6-speeds that felt like too many gears. I think 5 forward speeds is the sweet spot. Or let's just stop the nonsense and go CVT. I rented an 8-speed car for about a month while our Honda was in the body shop. I really tried to like it, but I just couldn't.

At least the US gets something. What about the taxes from the profits? Where do they go?

I think I'll stick with my 5/6 speed manuals or good old AW-4. I can replace an AW-4 for a few hundred dollars ... not half of my yearly salary ...

For Ford's sake, lets hope it doesn't turn out like the 6F35. Gm/Ford co-developed a transmission. Reliable in GM products, completely unreliable in Ford products.
