ATF fluid specs seem to all be going proprietary. Ford and GM co-developed their present 6-speed automatic trans-axles in a joint venture. But, I think they each specify their own special fluid, Dexron VI for GM and Mercon LV for Ford. Are these really different fluids, or is this just part of the ongoing move to have one ATF fluid "spec" for each and every mfg.?

Have a 2008 Mercury Sable AWD with the six speed auto. It specs Mercon V not LV.

So far ive seen a 2009 Escape and Focus that spec LV.

Not all Ford six speed automatics are from the Ford/GM joint design effort. Ford has also used ZF six speed automatics on some applications.

Also from what I understand, Ford and GM got together to save development costs, but the ending design is not identical.

Perhaps someone else has more insight on this topic.
