GM EVs Can Now Use Tesla Superchargers

Lots of rumors this past week about Tesla finally allowing GM EVs to use Superchargers. It’s now official, as the Tesla app shows most V3&V4 sites open to my Blazer EV. Numerous videos of GM EVs charging posted yesterday too.

EA, EVGo and CircleK stations popping up all over near me, so I’ll probably never use Tesla, but it’ll be a good emergency backup. Two Tesla sites that would be handy are old V2 stations that won’t work with non-GM.

One example:

Speculation on my part is the TSLA superchargers are likely to have a higher uptime/ more predictable the TSLA supercharger will be operating when you arrive.

Not sure I have confidence that an EV station at locations such as Circle K will have its EV in operation when one arrives, and if the charging station happens to be working, the station won't be occupied by an ICE with its owner inside the store buying cigarettes.

FWIW, I DCFC often at EA and CircleK in my Blazer EV and I’ve literally had zero issues. They always work.

But, in my area, almost every non-Tesla site is about 18 months old or newer. It seems to be old hardware at places like EA that are the problem. The newest equipment is excellent.

One downside is the GM adapter is $225 MSRP. Ford and Rivian gave them out for free. Sounds good on the surface, but Ford owners have been waiting 6+ months for delivery with no end in sight because of the demand - they messed up the entire supply chain by giving out something valuable for free. People are just flipping them on eBay for $250-$300.

It should be about $75 in my opinion. Drive away people who just wanted something for free and won’t even use it, but not enough to gouge people who really need it.

I got around $115 in Chevrolet Rewards points for accessories when I leased, so that paid for half (I just ordered one)

Anybody know the cost?

I seem to be unable to access the Public Charging section in the myChevrolet app even though I updated it yesterday, but I created a Tesla account and selected Bolt EV and this is what it shows me.

I have a Lectron adapter on the way. Ordered from their website with State of Charge's 15% promo code vs getting it for more money through GM.

I don't public charge often, I've done it maybe four times in almost a year of owning my Bolt, but next time I do it I will try doing it at a Tesla location as they typically have more chargers available. Price is pretty similar. But as you can see the nearest EVgo's CCS is offline. Surprisignly these EA chargers are not busy right now, last time I went there they were all being used.

The new CircleK I charge at often is 43¢/kWh and the myChevrolet app shows 46¢/kWh for the nearest Supercharger. The CircleK is a much better stop for my needs. Full convenience store, bathrooms, window washing, garbage cans, picnic tables, etc. vs. the back parking lot of a casino for the Tesla Superchargers.

The alternative EA station is 64¢/kWh. Those are all brand new 350kW/500A beasts though. Best for 800v EVs

Ford was going to stop giving them away for free, not sure that this has happened yet. There was a deadline. We were able to order ours for free but that was in June and we still don't have it yet. It's supposed to get here in October according to my owner profile on Ford.com. Supposedly they are getting these from Tesla and they are backordered.

If I had to drive our Mach-E 2000 miles tomorrow, I'd buy one of the ones off the jungle river site like the Lectron or AtoZ and then sell it at a discount when the free one finally arrived.

Gosh and I thought the EVgo station near me was bad. Those prices are insane. What are the membership prices in your area?

I'm paying 10-11 cents per KWH at home. I have not explored a membership because we've only done 1 road trip, and that was only to DFW.

My home power rate is like 4-5x yours so it's not even a huge markup. I have no idea what membership prices are for any of these but it's not worth it since I use DCFC a few times a year at most.

We've only used DCFC 6 times total. The first couple of times, before I realized that not having an L2 charging port already installed at home was an existential crisis for my wife's driving habits. And then the aforementioned trip to the Dallas area was the other 4. On the northbound trip we encountered an extremely strong headwind due to the hurricane going through Houston and East Texas that day, so we had to stop for about 15 minutes in Waco to top off, and then do a longer charge when we met up with my parents in Fort Worth for dinner, they were coming from the West Coast in their ID.4 and we had not seen them in 5 weeks. After getting back from our trip that we flew out of DFW for, we charged in a horrible neighborhood in Dallas to get up to 88% and then drove to Buc-ees in Temple to top off before arriving home with over 50%.

I will say that the estimates on Abetterrouteplanner are on the conservative side. For example I set it to estimate our stop around 15% SOC, which turned out to be the Temple Buc-ees, but when we got there the car was at 26% SOC, so we could have charged less in Dallas than what the app said and that would have saved us time. Charging above 80% is very slow on DCFC.

I'm getting a better feel for the car now and willing to run deeper into the battery. We went 60 miles out of town to wineries a couple of weekends ago and this after going to church which isn't that close to the house. After some rough edge of the seat calculations in my brain I was comfortable with the trip and then even doing some driving around after getting back into our area. Arrived home with 24% and over 60 miles of range. I should have noted how many miles we put on the car for the day but I'm willing to bet it was at least 150-160 miles. Yes, our AWD standard battery is pretty range challeged compared to say a Model 3 Long Range, but hey, it's a lot more than a Leaf, even a new one with the 40KWH battery. Probably the 62KWH Leaf Plus as well.

Sept 30th is the last day to claim a free Ford one. I heard there’re $230 if you order after that.

Charging my Bolt EV at a Tesla Supercharger worked great! My Lectron adapter arrived in like a day even though I chose the free/slow shipping.

I used the Tesla app as the myChevy app is broken like usual. Just charged for a minute to test, as you can see I was at just under 90% SoC so I was only getting 19kW, but that's to be expected. The guy sitting in the Tesla next to me did look at me kinda funny haha.

It's a bummer you have to use up two spots to charge due to the short cable and location of charging port on the Bolt. And not all Supercharger locations are compatible - for example this newer 250kW site is but the older 150kW site a few exits down the highway is not. But the Tesla app makes it clear which ones will work and which ones won't.

I'm so excited even though I might use this once a year. It just makes non-Tesla EVs that have access to the network a viable choice for those people that plan to do any type of road trip or long distance driving.

If anyone cares, you can apparently charge a Honda Prologue on a Tesla Supercharger if you have the adapter. All you do is select your car as a Chevy Blazer EV in the Tesla app. Awesome! Now I just need like 3x the money to replace my Bolt with a Prologue haha.

Or you could get a Tesla... Come on in, the water's fine.
