This is valid but irrelevant to the OP. If you are one of the 107 and you have been harmed the "pass" given, GM in this instance wouldn't flow off the tongue so readily.

Two things can be true.

*If you are one of the folks that's been injured or have a family member hurt, enraged wouldn't cover the level of disappointment. But i couldn't find how many cases, if any, fall under this umbrella. For those recalled (107), i would be more frustrated than anything else at this point.

*But it's also true that forums, news sources and those whom dislike a brand, will make a mountain out of a molehill where numbers are concerned. This doesn't mean that the BITOG member pointing this out lacks empathy.

Valid statement. My beliefs are consistent and I have the same comments for Fiero and Ford Pinto and the Crown Vic fires caused by rear end collisions. IIRC correct the Crown Vic matter was about 1200-1500 vehicled out of over 5 million vehicles? Might be off a bit but I'm close here. Statistically insigfigant number but did not change the severity of the matter...If its you or your loved one.

Maybe I'm wrong but we're not talking a bad engine or transmission design, this has potential of catastrophic results that are readily capable of death.

I'm not the biggest fan of EV's but not for any political reason they just don't offer me anything over ICE or a hybrid and the claims of "better" for the environment have proven to be false. I can see where my posts may lead one to believe otherwise. I've got about a year and a half before my next vehicle. Strong contenders are X5 (ICE), Highlander hybrid, and Lexus 450. For me I see the value in a hybrid but not married to it. X5 is my favorite but I wouldn't be looking to BMW for anything EV or hybrid.

Another awakening on EVs? Gimme a break dude. More like, another opportunity to take a shot at something you oppose. These threads are a waste of bandwidth because it's always the same people talking the same stuff, about things they have zero personal experience with.

But since you brought it up...this recall affects about 100 vehicles (out of tens of thousands) that did not have the diagnostic software installed properly. No actual fires were reported related to this recall.

Why then did the media jump all over it given the extremely limited number of vehicles? They are out there for their clicks and ad impressions just like those teenagers on Instgram and TikTok.

Nothing to see here, move along. These aren't the droids you are looking for.

The relevance for EVs would be that there's a lot of poorly installed NEMA 14-50 outlets out there that have melted down. You have to use an industrial rated plug like the Hubbell if you have an EV. The $11 Leviton at Home Depot is not going to cut it.

Yeah, I know it is off topic. But with the rapid growth of EVs, electrical fires are increasing either directly to the vehicle and/or the power source. Trust me, I think about this. My issue is owners that think they know how to do this on their own, hire the wrong guy, or already have faulty wiring.

When I talk to potential EV customers the 1st thing I ask is, "How ya gonna charge?"
The Daily News is a big puff piece "newspaper", but EV related fires is a big deal and not just from the EV.

My electrician told me to get rid of the Home Depot NEMA 14-50 and install a marine-rated Hubbell. That pushed me over the edge to spring for the Wall Charger, which he installed. "I install tons of these."

It wasn’t a shot at GM. They already had a stop sale issue on the vehicle previously. I wasn’t saying “but Tesla did it better.” It was an unrelated comment.

Jeff, Let's stat with the Daily News. We're both intelligent enough to know The Daily News is no better nor worse than the TImes or any other mainstream publication. They've all shown us bias and contempt (add your issue here) that discredits much of what any of them write. Hence the popularity of social media news outlets.

The story is still being written but here's my personal take. EV's have a place and can be very beneficial for certain drivers. My situation, not so much. Hybrid or ICE works well for me. I do not like Tesla's but that is 100% personal taste. Politics initially helped but ultimately harmed (IMO) EV's with bullying tactics pushing the consumer into something they weren't yet comfortable with. Politicians turned this into a divisive matter ICE v EV!! No reason ICE and EV can't be similar to I want a sports car v a SUV. A decision not a mandate.

Add to this the disingenuous claims of saving the environment. Again, politics. Comparisons to ICE were made off the lot without taking into account the manufacturing process and/or sourcing of the necessary materials. Keeping the labor of these sources out of this or the water gets too muddy. Extrapolated data from sourcing to 20 years shows ICE and EV with an insignificant difference in environmental savings. Really enlightening Ted talk on this I saw from a reputable presenter. If you want me to PM it I'll find it and do so.

There is big $$ to be made with EV's and I have every faith that manufacturers will streamline and work out the issue and we will get a better product to the end user. Growing pains will happen as did with ICE. The electrical fire issues, cold weather issues, etc.. will be rectified eventually. I'm sure longer drive ranges and times will come along as well and eventually lower cost battery replacements.

Reasonable and fair to challenge the source of the fire. Makes for good banter but we'll never know the factual answer. Changes are a mix of fault of both. EV's can be built horribly and cost the buyer a lot of money and media won't cover it but fires evoke destruction and heavy emotion. Fire gets a lot of coverage. In 2024 it is time-consuming and difficult to weed through the bias we are bombarded with from every direction.

Much of what you wrote is similar to what I have posted many times. EVs are not for everyone. No one vehicle is. No one needs a Porsche, Corvette, MBZ, BroDozer, you name it. An Accord/Camry is probably a smart vehicle for many people; perhaps that's why they sell so well.
Regarding EV fires, like any fires, there are numerous causes and contributing factors. Can be the EV, can be faulty wiring. 2 things can be true at once.

I suggest to you drive range issues are not what many think. I learned a lot during the past 5+ years of ownership. 99% of ICE vehicles spend far more time fueling than I do. And spend a lot more $$ doing so. That's the numbers.
How many miles do you drive on an average day? If it is over 250, an EV is likely a bad choice. But if it is under 100, an EV just might make pretty good sense. A lotta people are buying the Model Y, right?
